To be a companion to the donors. They talk with them, bring them treats, speak with the donor's doctors and nurses. They are there to try and make the end of the donor's life as pleasant as possible.

The tape was very special to Kathy, and she wanted it to be her own, private thing. Second, on the case, there was the singer smoking a cigarette, and everyone was always lectured on the dangers of smoking

Sometimes yes, sometimes no. When a carer is doing a particularly good job with their donors, they might given the option to choose some of their donors, and will sometimes pick people who they knew from earlier in their life.

How did the idea come about, that when something was lost, it meant that it was in Norfolk?
In class, the students learned about the different areas of England and there was a picture to go along with each area, except for Norfolk. They were always told however, that it was in an odd area on the coast, so that it was often bypassed by travelers; a sort of "lost corner" was a phrase used many times to describe it.
What does Ruth do when Kathy talks with her about Hailsham, to make Kathy feel excluded, childish and stupid?
Ruth pretends to forget things about Hailsham, that Kathy knows she remembers perfectly well.
Why does Kathy request to be Ruth's carer?
She requests this, because well on the road between recovery centers, she met up with one of her Hailsham friends and the friend mentioned to her the ideas, which she had already been considering for a while.
