Explain the relevance of the Judy Bridgewater tape.

The Judy Broadwater tape.

a. Like the clones it is a copy. This duplication is a fitting symbol for clones, who are duplications of others.

b. It also symbolises the character's attitudes towards life before and after Hailsham

For Kathy, the Bridgewater tape embodies her innocence at Hailsham, and her desire for physical and emotional connection with other people—with lovers, with children.

For Tommy, the tape also embodies this long lost emotional connection—Tommy wants desperately for Kathy to find the tape again in Norfolk.

For Ruth, the tape symbolizes a secret connection between Tommy and Kathy—a connection with which Ruth can have no part.

Madame cried when she saw Kathy dancing to the song NLMG, because she believed that Kathy enjoyed the song’s depiction of a “kinder world,” as compared to the cruel world into which Kathy will soon be thrust. To her, the tape recalls the cruelty of the world for clones whom she has tried to protect but whose lives are defined entirely by their cruel purpose as organ donors for "real" people.

Which guardian tells Tommy that it doesn't matter that his artwork isn't very good and he should stop worrying so much about it, and then later takes back this statement?   Why?

Miss Lucy.

She believes that the art work is a waste of time, as she knows they have only one role in life- to be carers and then donors.

200

Completing.

What are the symbols used in NLMG

Norfolk- Is a symbol of loss. The students call it the The lost corner of England, as Miss Emily could not find it on her map, however, it is seen by the students as a place where discarded things go -Just like the clones are discarded by society.

The Woods- dark and scary- symbolic of the unknown horrors of the outside world that await the Hailsham students.

Hailsham symbolizes the idea that clones are human beings, not just medical procedures. The guardians at Hailsham treat the children well and teach them to take care of each other.

For the clones who did not go there, Hailsham represents the idea that some clones have more privileges than others.

Madame's Gallery (art work)-

Like so much of the interaction between the clones and the outside world, only parts of the clones’ understanding is true. Left in the dark about the reason Madame mysteriously appears and selects then removes the best of their art and poetry, the clones fabricate stories and rumours to fill in the gaps. A source of pride in their innocence, the students imagine their art proudly displayed in a gallery run by Madame. Later, Tommy believes art reveals the souls of the creators, and this will be used to validate love and allow a deferral of their processing. Ultimately, the gallery represents lost hope as Tommy and Kathy find out that it was not real and that, although the art was used to try and prove the existence of souls in the clones, it was unsuccessful and causes the final loss of hope.

Why was Tommy often picked on and teased?

He was often picked on and teased, because the other kids could count on getting a reaction out of him.

Also- he did not draw or submit any work to the exchange, which meant that he failed to follow the unspoken rule of Hailsham.

300

When Kathy takes that trip to Norfolk with Chrissie, Rodney, Ruth and Tommy, what does the group try to find while there?

They try to find Ruth's possible.

300
After Ruth completes, who does Kathy become carer to?
Tommy.
300

What are the duties of a carer?

To take the clones to their appointments. They talk with them, bring them treats, speak with the donor's doctors and nurses. They are there to try and make the end of the donor's life as pleasant as possible.

300
Why were people cloned so that they could donate their organs?
Scientist found out that it was not possible to grow human organs in a lab, and that they could only be taken from a living human being. They decided that cloning was the best way to eradicate diseases while not killing real human beings.
400
Why did Kathy try so hard to hide her tape from everyone at Hailsham?
Two reasons. First, students at Hailsham don't have many belongings, and what they do have, they are often very protective of. The tape was very special to Kathy, and she wanted it to be her own, private thing. Second, on the case, there was the singer smoking a cigarette, and everyone was always lectured on the dangers of smoking, and how they should never do it. Kathy didn't want to get in trouble, so she kept it to herself.
400
What will Ruth and Kathy often do together late at night?
They will make cups of tea, bring them up in to one of their tiny bedrooms and talk until the early hours of the morning.
400
What rumor goes around that Ruth clings on to in the last few months of her life?
The rumor is that if a couple can show they are truly in love, they can be given extra time before doing their donations. First Ruth wants this for herself, and then later for Kathy.
400
Do donors know their carers, before they became their carers?
Sometimes yes, sometimes no. When a carer is doing a particularly good job with their donors, they might given the option to choose some of their donors, and will sometimes pick people who they knew from earlier in their life.
400

For what was the real purpose of the Gallery?

Madame and Miss Emily used to show people the students artwork in an effort at proving to the world that the clones did have souls.

500
How did the idea come about, that when something was lost, it meant that it was in Norfolk?
In class, the students learned about the different areas of England and there was a picture to go along with each area, except for Norfolk. They were always told however, that it was in an odd area on the coast, so that it was often bypassed by travelers; a sort of "lost corner" was a phrase used many times to describe it.
500
What does Ruth do when Kathy talks with her about Hailsham, to make Kathy feel excluded, childish and stupid?
Ruth pretends to forget things about Hailsham, that Kathy knows she remembers perfectly well.
500
Why does Kathy request to be Ruth's carer?
She requests this, because well on the road between recovery centers, she met up with one of her Hailsham friends and the friend mentioned to her the ideas, which she had already been considering for a while.
500
Why are certain people donors, and others aren't?
The donors are clones of other, regular people, and most of them grow up in often times cruel government centers without any family or interaction outside of that facility.
