Explain what the Missouri Compromise was and what 3 things it did and what the issue was surrounding it.

Missouri Compromise set up Missouri as a slave state, added Maine as a free state, and drew a line below Missouri which said that all states added above the line would be free states. Came to be because Missouri wanted to join the U.S. as a slave state and would have been unbalanced in Congress with 1 more slave state than free state.

1) Violation of U.S. free trade by Britain: England not allowing the U.S. to trade with France 2) Impressment of U.S. sailors by Britain: England would kidnap our merchant sailors and force them to fight for England 3) Encouragement of Native American rebellions in Indiana by the British: England trying to get the Native Americans to fight against the U.S.

Midnight judges appointed by Adams didn't get their appointments and one judge sued saying the president couldn't hold his appointment, Jefferson was president and purposefully didn't deliver the appointments on purpose, and it set up the idea of judicial review
