Academic Workshop hosted by Active House (approx. 1 hour 30 min)
Unique & Shared - NMs and Actives get into groups and identify attributes that everyone has in common along with interesting characteristics that are unique to a person in the group
Candy Icebreaker - Each person picks a colored Skittle and Hershey’s kisses; each color/Kisses represents a story or moment that the person shares. Everyone goes around telling their story that corresponds to their candy color/Kisses.
Process Calendar - NMs asked to create and present a calendar that shows the Active house how they plan on meeting all the requirements of the NMP while balancing their academics and extracurricular activities. To develop time management skills by planning ahead, setting deadlines, and organizing schedules. To learn to work with each others’ schedules.

What is the theme and purpose of week 0?

This is a week free of sorority and NMP related activities for new members to evaluate if undertaking the NMP and joining akdphi is really for them.
For NMs to evaluate whether to sign the NM Contracts (due Week 1 Chapter Meeting) and whether the NMP and aKDPhi is for them.
What if my chapter wants to include a chapter specific tradition in NMP?
Submit a Chapter Proposal Request Form (4 weeks before NMP)
What is the purpose of having a standardized NMP or Why should you abide by the NMP?
Avoid Hazing
Members could face criminal records if found hazing or deviating from the NMP
Chapter could lose its charter if found hazing
Promote the longevity of the sorority
Universal and shared experience among other chapters

What happens during the week 2 Educational Event?
Quiz - Greek alphabet, family tree/lineage
Alphabet Race - The class is asked to say the Greek Alphabet. They are instructed to finish in 15 seconds or less, or they must start over. The end goal is for the class to figure out they need to say the alphabet together as a class. To stress the importance of working together as a class and to listen carefully to directions.
***Present NM Collages - NMs make a collage to get to know each other while finding unique / unifying qualities amongst the class. To discuss what their culture means to them.
***Privilege for Sale**** - NMs and actives break into groups and discuss what privileges they want to buy, with every group getting a different amount of money; emphasizes privileges we may or may not have

Asian American Woman Presentation - select one woman from Asian American history to research and present. The woman can be Asian, Asian American, or APIA-Ally. To educate NMs on significance of Asian American/APIA Ally women throughout history.

What happens if you get reported for hazing or What happens if you don’t follow the NMP?
Cease all chapter activities
Undergo investigation by the university
Undergo investigation by National Board
Indefinite revocation of your chapter’s charter if found guilty

Quiz - Full fledged chapters and associated Greek letters, chapter regions, and chapter executive board (bonus)
Map Activity - Have the class pinpoint every one of our chapters on a map. To realize sisterhood is everywhere.
Why I Serve - Actives teach about our National Philanthropy of BCA and the sorority pillar of service. Then NMs will join in the discussion. To educate NMs about the history of BCA in aKDPhi and why service is important.
Listen to my Words - Facilitator will read a set of instructions out loud while the new members are performing the task with their eyes closed (it’s the paper ripping one). To practice and improve critical listening. Detail is key in effective communication.
What happens during the week 3 new member chapter?

Individual and Class Interview - Interviews review progress of the individual, look at grades in school, completion of tasks, interviews, attendance, conduct, information, past quiz results, address other issues, ask what we can do for them.
Check in on the progress of all tasks - they should have completed at least half of the required hosted events. If not, have them submit planning forms for the events at EE.
Inform NMs that at Week 4, they will be responsible for (2) presentations: NM Class Position and Alumnae Presentations.

When can alumnae and affiliates be involved in NMP?
Alumnae & Affiliates must complete the NMP training each semester/quarter she plans on being involved with the New Member Process.
Alumnae & Affiliates must maintain an observatory role ONLY. They must not be involved in any instructional capacity.
There is now a $100 fine per untrained member and additional consequences up to the discretion of National Board.

Alumnae Presentation - to get to know alumnae. only time when alums can be present for EE if they are trained. This is a professional presentation.
Something I admire - Actives will draw a name out of a bag and share a quality they admire about that sister & how contributions are unique. NMs will do the same with their own class. Then both Actives and NMs will draw out of the same bag. To understand and identify the importance of each individual’s contribution to the class.
Leadership Compass - Each side of the room has a description of a different leadership style (4 total) - the house and the NMs separate into which style fits them best. Each side shares information about their leadership style. Teaches that there isn’t just one type of leader.
Sisterhood Roundtable - (Actives do not need to be present. NME will facilitate) NMs given opportunity to discuss issues and problems and then talk about each NM’s unique qualities that make their class strong. To provide NMs with a venue for open discussion in which they can build trust. Line sisters believe in them & they can handle anything. Help bond the girls closer together

What happens during the week 5 Educational Event?
Quiz - Traditions, Sorority Songs (Verbal), Mission and Vision statement (verbatim), Crest elements (verbatim)
Purple Heart Sisterhood - Purple Hearts must be signed and completed. For actives and NMs to get to know each other. The Actives will ask each NM to share experience and what they learned. NMs present Purple Hearts. Actives will explain the purpose of them (PH becomes a symbol and memory of the NM and the Actives that helped guide her throughout process).
Sacrifice Stories - Have each NM and Active prepare a story about sacrifice to be told to their class and the active house at EE. Allows everyone to learn about what others think about sacrifice and what it means to them.
Web of Sisterhood - Have a ball of yarn or string and arrange actives and new members in a circle. A sister will start off with the ball of yarn and say something that they appreciate about another sister, then they will pass the ball to the sister they acknowledged. This pattern continues until all sisters have been passed the ball of yarn, thus making a “web” within the circle
