It is how I feel about myself and what I am worth. A high self esteem helps me feel confident and good about myself.

Why is it important to stop and think before becoming defensive towards my mother when talking? 

Getting defensive could lead to an argument and would not be helpful. We would rather want to listen and think about what we are saying while attempting to control by emotions.
