A list of chapters usually on the front few pages of the book that tell the reader where to find them.
Charts/Graphs
A visual image of information
Annotate
to comment on a text in the form of written notes
Research
systematic, diligent investigation to establish facts or to collect information on a specific topic
Glossary
A list of words that are usually in the back of the book that tell the reader the definitions. The words are listed in alphabetical order
Maps
A diagram that shows where a specific place is located
Bias
prejudice against or favoritism toward one side; lacking a neutral point of view
Source aka resource
a place or person from which specific information can be obtained
Headings
A bolded word/title found at the top of a page to indicate the beginning of a chapter.
Bold/Italicized Text
Bold text is used to make certain text stand out and catch the reader's attention.
Words are italicized to draw attention to them, to differentiate them from the surrounding text, or to indicate that they are foreign words
Citation
when you state where the information you used came from; used to separate where your ideas are and where another’s ideas are in your paper; (verb) to give the original author credit for their work
Credibility
the quality of being believable or trustworthy
Subheadings
A slightly smaller version of a heading
Captions
Title/brief explanation to a text
Claim
an arguable statement that serves as the focus of an essay
Evaluate
to assess how valuable or useable something is
Index
A list of names and places found at the end of the book that tell us where they can be found in the text.
Sidebars
A short article typically on the side of a text just like a caption
Hypothesis
an idea, which can be proven, that explains an event or process
Plagiarism
the illegal act of using or closely imitating the language and/or ideas of another author without authorization, and the representation of that author's work as one's own by not crediting the original author
