A list of definitions that are in the text and/or needed to understand the text.
What is a glossary?
A list of page numbers showing what page each chapter starts
What is a table of contents?
A text that tries to CONVINCE you of something.
What is Persuasive?
An advertisement asking for money and showing children that are dirty, undernourished and living in poor conditions.
What is Pathos?
The thief snuck in, silent as a cat.
What is a simile?
“To be, or not to be—that is the question.”
What is antithesis?
(also juxtaposition)
A short bit of additional information of explanation or interest that is set at the top or out to the side so as not to interrupt the main text.
What is a sidebar?
A visual representation of an area of land or sea showing physical features, cities, roads, etc.
What is a map?
A text that seeks to EXPLAIN something.
What is an expository text?
An ad for Gatorade that uses a celebrity basketball player to speak about the product.
What is Ethos?
The stars cried down on the star-crossed loves as the moon sent a secret smile to the gods.
What is personification?
This Easter we are going to have an Eggstraordinary good time hunting eggs.
What is a pun?
A real picture, not a drawing
What is a photograph?
A word or phrase dividing the text into sections to give readers an idea of what part of the text is about
What is a heading or subheading?
Also-subtitle
A text that gives INSTRUCTIONS or tells you how to DO something.
What is a technical text?
A persuasive text about smoking that gives facts and statistics about the health impacts of smoking.
What is Logos?
The sun was a glowing ship that sailed across blue skies.
What is a metaphor?
What did the Roman warrior say when the lion killed his wife?
Glad he ate her
What is a pun?
An organized way to show data/information visually
What is a Chart or Graph?
Text feature in the back of a nonfiction text used to locate the page numbers of different topics
What is an index?
Characterized by facts, statistics and information, tries to explain about a topic
What is an expository text?
As a college professor in mathematics for 30 years, a doctoral degree in calculus and a master's degree in teaching, I can tell you that calculators have diminished the capabilities of students to do mental math.
What is Ethos?
I love to order jumbo shrimp when I go out to a restaurant.
What is an oxymoron?
Her eyes burned with an icy blue stare.
What is paradox?
A short description of a photograph or illustration
What is a caption?
A note at the bottom of the page that gives more information about something in a text.
What is a footnote?
Characterized by rhetorical appeals, Ethos, Pathos, and Logos
What is persuasive texts?
Lisa was a 17-year-old honors student, whose last day of class was the day before prom. Lisa won't attend any football games as senior cheer captain, will miss her graduation, and won't be choosing a career or college. Her date drove drunk. Don't drink and drive.
What is Pathos?
Women have traded the glass slipper for the glass ceiling in their adult lives.
What is an allusion?
