What was the "Bonus Army?"

After victory in World War I, the US government promised in 1924 that servicemen would receive a bonus for their service, but not until 1945. The bonus was often called the “Tombstone Bonus.” In 1932, with the Depression still dragging on, out of sheer desperation, some of the veterans decided to march on Washington to ask for the bonus right away.  It turned into a violent conflict when the Senate refused and President Hoover ordered the Army to clear the protesters.  Four years later, Congress approved payment of the bonuses and many consider this the first step to the GI Bill, passed in 1944.
