What was the goal of the 2024 NSECE?

No.  The R does NOT need to be living at the same address.

I do not use childcare.  I participated in the original 2024 study.  Am I eligible?

Yes.  Every HH that participated in the original study is eligible.

I called the R and there was no answer.  Do I have to leave a message?

Some FIs find the following strategy effective.  If no one answers the phone on your first attempt, end the call and wait five minutes.  Then call again.  After the second attempt, leave a voice message.  Leaving a message is up to the discretion of the FI.  Be judicious.

To compare the HH childcare arrangments from the original interview to the present time.

What is the maximum age that a child COULD be in order to be eligible for the NSECE FU Study?

A child from the original HH who was 13 years old during the original data collection period in 2024 could now possibly be as old as 14 years old.

The original R has a new live-in boyfriend who just moved into this HH this month.  Can he complete the interview?

No.  He was not part of the original HH.

What is the shortest amount of time it might take a R to complete the survey?

20 minutes

I called R and she said she remembered the last interview and it was too long and she doesn't want to do that again.  What should I do?

Thank the R for their original participation.  Because this is a follow-up, she can not be replaced.  This is a much shorter interview and she can complete it online. If R is still not interested, document the refusal and speak to your FM.

How is the focal child identified?

The instrument will choose the focal child.  This is a child that was a part of the original HH.  The instrument will ask further questions about this child's childcare arrangements.

Is an adult who was not in the original 2024 HH eligible to participate in the Follow-Up Study?

No.  The R in the Follow-Up Study has to be someone who lived in the original 2024 HH.

The original R has a new live-in boyfriend whose own child has joined the original HH on weekends only.  Is the original R still eligible?

Yes.  The original R is still eligible, regardless of changes in the HH.

What are the three different amounts the R might have received for a pre-incentive?  Should the FI mention the pre-incentive to the R?

The FI should not initiate mentioning the pre-incentive.

What should an FI do if an R mentions calling the police?

Apologize for the inconvenience and end the interaction.  Write a ROC and document hostile refusals.

Which of the following is NOT asked in the 2024 NSECE Follow-Up Study?

The work and commuting schedules of the parents is not asked in the Follow-Up Study.

We are not asking about the locations of childcare in the Follow-Up Study.

Does your potential R need to know about the childcare arrangements for the HH during the original 2024 study to be eligible to participate?

Yes.  To be eligible, R must be knowledgeable about childcare arrangements from the original HH and the current HH.

When you call an R, grandma answers the phone and says that the children no longer live with her because their mom got married and moved with the children and her new husband to another state.  Is grandma eligible to participate?

No.  Grandma no longer is knowledgeable about the current childcare arrangements.

How is the 2024 NSECE Follow-Up Study different from the main 2024 survey?

The original NSECE was an address-based sample while the Follow-UP is not.

How many days a week does an R need to live with a child to be eligible?

The children need to live with an R at least one day a week.

You are able to reach the original R over the phone but that R informs you that the HH has moved.  What steps should you take?

Determine if the original R is knowledgeable about the current childcare arrangements for any of the children who were living with the R on the date of the last interview.  Make a note of the new address in the Contacts tab and make sure to include this information in the ROC.

In what form and how much is the incentive?

The $20 is available as cash mailed to the home, Walmart, Lowe's or Amazon e-gift cards sent to a valid email address.

How should you respond if a R asks you to watch their children?

Tell the R that FIs cannot supervise children.
