Your brain's main source of energy.

Sugar/Glucose/Carbohydrates

100

Symptoms of low iron/iron deficiency.

Fatigue, weakness, difficulty maintain body temperature/cold intolerance, pale skin/fingernails, dizziness, headache, glossitis (inflamed tongue).

100

You should use unrefined sugars (like honey, agave, maple syrup), instead of the standard white, table sugar.

CAP: A carbohydrate is a carbohydrate and your body doesn't notice the difference between any of these. Honey, agave, and maple syrup MAY contain a very small amount of micronutrients, but considering we typically use these to sweeten things up, you'd have to eat a ton of it on a daily basis for it to actually really count towards your micronutrient needs for the day.

Brown eggs are better than white eggs.

CAP: There is no nutritional difference between the two of them. They just come from two different hens.

Vitamins A, D, E, and K need this macronutrient to be absorbed in the body.

Fat

200

Why are B-vitamins important?

They help your body use the energy from macronutrients (i.e., carbohydrates, fat, and protein) for fuel.

200

Detoxes are unnecessary because you have a liver and a kidney.

FACT: Detoxes and juice cleanses often cause diarrhea and negatively affect your hydration status. Your liver and kidneys (and GI tract) are basically "filters" for your body and help to "clean out" toxins from your body.

Just because a food is labeled "natural" doesn't mean that it is superior to those that are not.

TRUE: Natural just means that it is minimally processed or doesn't have a lot of additives (additives can add to the flavor of the food product and can extend a product's shelf-life - they are not bad!) - the FDA ONLY has criteria for meat (NOT other foods) when it comes to labeling products as "natural." Natural for meat does not exclude whether an antibiotic/hormone was used on the cows/animals. The takeaway from this is that the term natural is not really regulated.
300

Macronutrient that is most important for you to replenish after you workout.

Carbohydrates! Unless you are trying to build and/or repair muscle it is recommended that carbohydrates and electrolytes should be your main form of replenishment after a workout in order to support synthesis of glycogen stores (storage form of glucose/carbohydrates in the body!).

300

Besides bone health, why is calcium important for your body?

Helps in blood clotting, muscle contraction, regulating normal heart rhythms, and nerve functions.

300

Food is processed in your body differently after 8 PM.

CAP: The way food is processed in your bodies doesn't change according to the time on a clock. The biggest take away here is that if you eat too close to when you go to bed/lay down, you may have a little indigestion/acid reflux.

300

Sweet potatoes are healthier than white potatoes.

CAP: White potatoes are very nutrient dense. The only difference between the two is that they offer different types of nutrition, but both are extremely good for us!

400

Importance of fats in the body.

Helps provide your body energy, protects your organs, supports cell growth, keeps cholesterol and blood pressure under control, helps regulate body temperature, and much more.

400

Which has more potassium: a banana or a potato?

Potato! Potassium is an electrolyte that helps not only our heart (helps maintain blood pressure levels and heart contractions), but also helps our muscles contract and maintain a healthy nervous system as well - in other words, it helps to maintain normal fluid levels in our bodies!

400

Nutrition labels are always accurate.

CAP: Nutrition labels allow for a 20% margin of error - it could have 20% more or less than what is listed.

400

There are certain criteria that have to be met in order for a food to be considered a "super-food."

CAP: There is no actual category that is nutritionally recognized as a "super-food." There is not a single food in the world that can offer all the nutrition (i.e., micronutrients (vitamins/minerals), macronutrients (carbohydrates, protein, fat), and fluid that we need to be functional, nourished, happy people. This is one of the reasons that dietitians emphasize incorporating a variety of food!

500

Importance of protein in the body.

Helps repair/build your body's tissues, help maintain pH and fluid balance, support your immune system, help transport/store nutrients, and much more.

500

What is the most common micronutrient deficiency in the world?

Iron deficiency.

500

The gluten-free diet should only be used for people that have celiac disease, gluten intolerance, or a gluten allergy.

TRUE: Gluten is the protein that essentially holds wheat, rye, and barely together. If you don't have these diagnoses and are avoiding gluten, you may also be avoiding vitamins, minerals, and fiber.

BMI is very helpful in assessing someone's health.

CAP: BMI is incredibly inaccurate in assessing one's individual health. It doesn't take into account gender, muscle mass, bone density, body composition, racial differences, etc. It was created in the 19th century by a mathematician, not even a doctor, and was designed for and by Western European, white men - and it's not even accurate for them. It was also meant to be used at the population level (not the individual level) so that healthcare resources could be allocated!
