What is the first step in the scientific method?
Purpose/Question
What is an educated, testable guess?
Hypothesis
What step of the scientific method do you predict a possible answer to a problem or a question?
Hypothesis
Anything that changes in an experiment is called a...
Variable
Why are controlled variables super important?
It keeps a "fair test".
What step of the scientific method do you test your hypothesis?
Experiment
What is a series of steps that scientists use to answer questions and solve problems?
The Scientific Method
What is the proper format for writing a hypothesis?
"If...then..."
What is the variable that you make different on purpose in order to test it?
Independent Variable
The process of obtaining information by using the senses is called?
An Observation
In which step of the scientific method do you present your experiment, observations, and analysis to others?
Conclusion
What is the conclusion in the scientific method?
the answer to your question; a summary of what you have learned from an experiment
"Putting my plant in the closet will decrease it's chance of living." What is wrong with this hypothesis?
Missing the "If...then..." statement
What is the variable that you observe or measure in an experiment?
Dependent Variable
What are the facts, numbers, and other evidence gathered through observations called?
Data
In which step of the scientific method do you use your information to draw conclusions about your experiment?
Analysis
What is the factor in an experiment that a scientist purposely changes; the cause?
Independent Variable
If you drink more milk will you get stronger bones? State a good hypothesis for this question.
If you increase the amount of milk you drink, then you will increase the strength of your bones.
What is the type of variable that stays the same to keep an experiment fair?
Controlled Variable
"The higher the temperature of water, the faster an egg will boil." Identify the Independent, dependent, and controlled variables.
Independent variable: temperature of water
Dependent variable: time to cook an egg
Controlled variable: type of egg
List all 6 steps to the Scientific Method in order.
Question, Research, Hypothesis, Experiment, Analysis, Conclusion
What is the factor that changes (measured) as a result of the experiment; the effect?
Dependent Variable
Read the following experiment and state a good hypothesis. I am doing a test to see if there is a connection between how long you run and how fast your heart beats. I will be performing an experiment where a person will run for a 1 minute and I will check their heartbeat. Then they will run for 2 minutes and I will check their heart rate. I will do this up to 6 minutes and see if there is a connection. What do you think my hypothesis should be?
If I increase the amount of time I run, then my heartbeat will increase.
The amount of variables that you can change in an experiment?
1
A list of things you do to perform the experiment (not scientific method).
