Maniac is "color-blind" to the issues of racism. He does not seem to understand that the town of Two Mills is separated by race and does not base his actions or thoughts off of race, as other people in the town do. For example, Maniac was living with the Beales in the East End, which is all black, and did not think twice about playing with the kids on that side of town or living with the Beale family.

Maniac chose to leave the Beale's house because he did not want anything bad to happen to the Beale family. For example, in the story the outside of the Beale's house is vandalized by someone in the East End. The word Fishbelly was written on their house. Maniac knew this was written in relation to him so he left before anything else could happen.

At the beginning of Hoot Beatrice is skeptical of Roy and his mischief. She does not want him getting into her family business and finding out about Mullet Fingers. Towards the end of the Hoot, Beatrice finds Roy to be a great friend. She realizes he is trying to help Mullet Fingers and the owls and stands up for Roy and his adventures. They work as a team. Her attitudes are different in that her first attitude was negative whereas her attitude towards the end was positive.
