What is anaphylaxis?
Anaphylaxis is a serious and overwhelming, systemic, allergic reaction to a protein that enters the body. It can be caused by a variety of substances ranging from bee venom to certain food products and medications.

What are two limits placed on non-swimmers?
1. They must wear their PFD during any water-related activity. 2. They can't paddle in a boat with another non-swimmer.

When should base be contacted if a runaway situation occurs? Who should do the contacting?
Base should be contacted after 15 minutes and continue with plan from there. If student is going near a pay phone, contact base immediately so that we can prep parents. Contact immediately if you lose sight and sound. Team phone should stay with team. Call lead instructor at camp, who will contact base. If you don't hear from the run person after 20 minutes or if you can't get a hold of lead, call base.

When the distance between flash and boom is 25 seconds or less, i.e. 5 miles or closer.

What should you administer for anaphylaxis?
Epinephrine if the airway is closing, followed by Benedryl tablets. Benadryl tablets should be given prior to Epinephrine if possible as well.

What is night paddle policy?
*The e-light goes in boat one and a headlamp in the last boat. *If a boat comes by, you shine the lights toward the direction of the boat and then on the reflective tape of the canoes. *PFDs must be worn. *Canoes should be 1-2 boat lengths apart. *An instructor should be in the stern of lead and sweep boat. *Talking should be quiet enough for the instructional team to communicate. *Boat checks will be called out. *Will not happen during training, unless students have gotten practice during canoe training in unloaded boats.

PFDs will be worn. No stopping, unless there is an extreme emergency. Identify a landmark on horizon that all recognize. Travel in a straight, 'widthwise,' pod formation, no more than one boat length apart. Instructors will be on both ends of convoy.

What is the grievance procedure?
Should be informally addressed first if possible. If not, then it should be written down by student with corrective action and signed. The student should then bring it to the person with whom the grievance is for. The instructor should sign it as acknowledgement of receipt (not guilt). If still not resolved, should be brought to CD who then has 48 hours to render a decision. If still not resolved then it goes to the PD who has 48 hours.

What is the swimming/dipping/jumping policy?
Instructors will ensure area is safe and designate boundaries. At least one instructor must be in the water or at water's edge. Footwear is required except in ocean or clear springs. On shore there needs to be throw rope, float cushion and canoe paddle nearby. No rope swings may be used. A 1:5 supervision ration will be used while students are swimming.
