This describes the type of manual wheeled mobility that is indicated for individuals who demonstrate an inability to safely generate manual propulsion or operate power mobility secondary to severe physical, cognitive, and/or visual impairment.
What is dependent mobility system?
This type of power mobility is indicated for individuals who are marginal ambulators and need mobility assistance to conserve energy. Commonly for community use.
What is a scooter?
A COTA is addressing functional ambulation during ADL completion with a patient who is weight-bearing as tolerated after recent hip replacement surgery. This type of MAE is the MOST appropriate to use during functional ambulation.
What is standard walker?
This is a combination of three assessment: safe functional mobility within customary areas of home; safe accessibility to enable ADLs; safe accessibility to enable IADLs.
What is a home evaluation?
These are “…general purpose, high tech, electronically powered devices that include appliance control, telephone access, TV, DVD and CD control, remote access to doors, drapes and window.”
What are EADL's?
Ultra-lightweight (custom) manual wheelchairs have this feature which, when moved forward or backward, can make the chair more stable or more tippy/responsive.
What is adjustable rear axle position?
These describe the three types of drive wheel configuration on a power wheelchair.
What is front, center and back?
A COTA is measuring the anatomical seat to floor height to fit a new patient for a wheelchair at her facility. She determines an anatomical measurement of 18”. If the patient will be sitting on a 2” cushion and we allow for 2” of foot clearance, this is what the seat to floor height of the w/c should be.
What is 22"?
Usually the most important person(s) you make sure are present during the home evaluation.
Who is the client/family/stakeholders?
A low tech, augmentative and specific purpose piece of assistive technology that a COTA could recommend to increase safety with navigating steps.
What is a railing?
The two types of ultra-lightweight (custom) manual wheelchair frames.
What is box style and cantilever style?
This power seating function refers to the ability to rotate a specific seating position around a fixed axis, thus changing the orientation in space.
What is tilt-n-space?
A COTA is working with a patient who has had a total hip replacement. The patient is ready to go home, but still has hip precautions. These 2 items would be the most appropriate/least costly recommendations the COTA could make regarding shower/bathing at home.
What is a long-handled sponge/handheld shower and tub bench?
These are made at the conclusion of the home evaluation; it is up to the stakeholders and the patient to implement or ignore them.
What is the recommendations?
“Any item, piece of equipment or product system whether acquired commercially off the shelf, modified or customized that is used to increase, maintain or improve functional capabilities of individuals with disabilities.”
What is assistive technology?
The lightest of the three main types of manual wheelchair wheels discussed.
What is spinergy?
This type of electronics has typical features including: joystick is only option to drive the wheelchair, limited programming for speed and responsiveness, no ability for alternative driver controls.
A COTA wants to challenge and improve her patient’s postural control to enable safe completion of LB ADL’s. The COTA should instruct the patient to sit in this manner to challenge postural control while seated in the wheelchair.
What is an anterior pelvic tilt?
During the home evaluation, a COTA applies knowledge of this, demonstrated during the patient’s rehab stay, to the home environment as a strategy to use time efficiently.
What is mobility status/functional status?
This piece of adaptive equipment/assistive technology is recommended when a person has decreased activity tolerance and needs energy conservation, decreased balance and/or low vision, placing them at increased risk of falls during showering/bathing.
What is a tub seat?
Moving the manual wheelchair axle this way on the wheelchair frame increases the responsiveness/”tippiness” of the wheelchair by placing more of the users weight directly over the wheel.
What is forward?
This type of driver control (proportional or non-proportional) is generally selected when a client exhibits a small/specific area of movement, decreased coordination and/or grasp/release difficulties.
What is non-proportional?
A COTA is completing a home evaluation for a patient who uses a wheelchair operated by sip ‘n puff. The patient will live alone with hired caregiver support. An EADL system is being installed in his home to be operated through his wheelchair electronics. These 2 things would be most important to be able to operate.
What is door locks and telephone?
Bedside commode, raised toilet seat, shower chair.
What is a 3-n-1?
A touch screen, wheelchair driver control, voice operated and keyboard are all examples of this; a component of the EADL.
What is an input device/control interface?
