Add technical error note: "Repeat total protein due to RBC's on prism Hematocrit value will not be determined." Restick donor, collect two samples, correct fingerstick time, and protein value. Reason for correct will be "technical error."

When taking a donors photo, what are the requirements?

A plain and uncluttered background

Picture must include the top of the Donor’s shoulders to the top of the head. 

Donor should remove hat, scarf, sunglasses, or any other items that might interfere with clear Donor identification in the photograph.

A donor presents with depression, but has had no history of suicide attempts within the last 4 months, no psychiatric hospitalization in the last 6 months and no current suicidal ideation. Are they suitable to donate?

No because they are only acceptable if there were no suicide attempts within the last six months.

Is it acceptable to process multiple units of plasma at the same time?

No. All units must be processed individually.

Fail the initial QC in NexLynk. Open a new sublot and repeat QC. If the new sublot fails, fail it in the system and remove equipment from service.

A return donor just informed you that she recently got married and has a new last name. What do you do?

Ask the donor for current proof of legal name change (marriage certificate). Update name in NexLynk by adding "new name" and documenting the new legal name.

When removing your donors sample from the Hematastat you notice the sample appears "milky" what do you do?

Place sample tube in front of the thickest black line on the footer of NF1131, Donor Education Handout for Lipemic Plasma if the sample appears cloudy or milky white. If sample is determined to be lipemic, a 1 day Lipemic Deferral note will need to be applied, and donor educated.

When weighing a donor you notice that the donor has a medical brace on their leg. What do you do? 

Determine the type of brace: 

For braces made of soft elastic fabric, weight may not be a factor and therefore, the donor can leave on braces during the weigh-in process. 

Donors requiring the use of metal braces are required to remove braces while weight is being obtained. 

Add Special Needs Note to Donor’s chart. Document in Comments, “Donor is required to remove metal braces during weigh-in” or something similar.

How long is the deferral for someone who has had a human bone transplant?

4 months from the date of transplant.

What are the proper steps for blood samples when receiving them into the lab?

Immediately place them into the refrigerator in the appropriate clamshells and ensure they are scanned into the manifest.
