This Mississippi Magnolia was an investigative journalist who used her writing skills to expose the oppression of African Americans in the South during the late 19th and early 20th centuries. After exposing the injustice of several lynchings, she had to flee to Chicago to escape violent threats. There she continued to advocate for equal rights for women and African Americans and founded the National Association of Colored Women’s Club.
