Four reasons why women were officially allowed to join APO

1. Anti-establishment movement → resulted in drop in membership for many campus organizations → many chapters became inactive and admitting women as members was seen by many as the answer to declining membership
2. Women’s liberation movement → popular movement that caused many college students to question restricting membership in a service organization to men
3. Chapters already incorporated women → before 1976, many chapters were already incorporating women into their membership in many ways (accepting women as sisters, registering women under an alias, etc.)
4. Title IX Federal Higher Education Act → passed by Congress in 1972 → denied federal funding support to institutions that allowed organizations with restricted membership → many APO chapters were at risk of losing campus recognition if they did not start to admit women
