In the event of a missing student, what are the steps that RA need to take?
1. The ARL or DoS staff member will gather as much information as possible including the potentially missing resident’s name, ID #, the name of the individual who is making the report, the reporter’s relationship to the resident, and the reporter’s contact information. They should also gather any information regarding the situation (i.e. the student was supposed to call after they got out of class three hours ago or never returned to their residence hall room the previous night, which is out of character for the student, or any health history or medical conditions that may be relevant, etc.).
If there is any concern for the immediate welfare of an individual resident or the UTA community, the ARL or DoS staff member will immediately contact UTAPD to file a report, if they have not done so already. If the ARL staff member handling the report is an Office Assistant (OA) or Resident Assistant/Resident Assistant on call (RA), they will contact the Residence Director/Residence Director on-call (RD) after notifying UTAPD.
2. If there is no immediate threat or concern for the welfare or safety of the resident, the ARL or DoS staff will take all reasonable steps to make contact with the resident including, but not limited to knocking on the resident’s door, calling, and/or messaging the resident via any means reasonably available (text, GroupMe, Facebook, Instagram, etc.), reaching out to neighbors, etc.
3. If the resident responds, the ARL staff member will write an incident report. The ARL staff member will strongly encourage the resident to contact the individual(s) attempting to get a hold of them, if a suggestion of contact is appropriate.
4. If the ARL staff member is unable to make contact with the resident after an hour, they will contact the RD and pass along all the information they received from the reporting person, as well as their own action steps to contact the resident.
Several residents have complained about a room/apartment a few doors down. The residents believe the room/apartment are having a party. There is excessive noise and people coming in and out of the room that do not live in the hall/room/apartment. After you arrive at the room, you notice 15+ students, alcohol on the coffee table and loud music coming from a speaker.
1. Find the residents of the room/apartment.
2. Ask for the music to be turned off.
3. Explain all the violations that are occurring, 1. noise violation, 2. possible alcohol violation, 3. room capacity (to many people in a room).
4. Ask for IDs of all people in the space (DL/State to verify age for any guests who do not live in the community).
5. If alcohol violation is confirmed, ask for all alcohol to be brought to the center of the room (photograph), have alcohol poured down the drain, and have 1 person walk it to the dumpster.
6. Escort all guests out of the community.
*If involved parties are not being compliant call UTAPD and RD on Call.
