What are the three types of hooks?

There are 3 types of hooks; you can ask a question and you can even state an opinion or fact.

100

Where is the introduction paragraph located?

The introduction paragraph is the first paragraph.

100

Where are the body paragraphs located?

Body paragraphs are found in the middle of the essay.

100

Where is the conclusion paragraph located?

The conclusion paragraph is located at the end of the essay; it is the last paragraph.

100

Is this a reason or an example?

"Ants help clean up the environment by eating food scraps."

Reason - this is why the author feels like ants are important.

200

What is the purpose of hooks?

To grab the reader's attention and make them interested in learning or reading more about a topic.

200

How many sentences should be in an introduction paragraph?

3 to 5 sentences - hook, opinion, and the three details (reasons/examples) you will talk about.

200

How many body paragraphs should there be?

There should be 2 or more strongly developed body paragraphs. Each paragraph should have 5 or more complete sentences.

200

How many sentences are in a conclusion paragraph?

A conclusion paragraph should have 3 to 4 sentences.  You should restate the main opinion, summarize the reasons/examples, and leave readers with a final thought about the topic.

200

Is this a reason or an example?

"For example, ants work together to lift objects 50 times heavier than their body weight."

Example - this helps explain or prove a reason. It makes the reason ("ants are strong") more clear and believable by using real facts from an article.

Write the letter: Which of the following is a question attention grabber?

A.) "Ants are small insects with six legs."

B.) "Did you know that ants eat dead plants?"

B is the correct response.

You can tell the hook is a question type because of the question mark (?) at the end. When you write a question hook, you want to ask a question with the 5 W's and H. Your question should make the reader think and want to continue reading.

300

Yes or No: Is this a good introduction paragraph?

Ants are bugs. They crawl around, and some people step on them. I guess they do stuff like build nests or whatever. I don’t really care about ants, and I don't have much to say about them.

No. This introduction does not have a hook, clear opinion, stay focused on the topic, or state any interesting details.

300

What should be the format of a body paragraph?

OREO!  Opinion, Reason, Example, ANOTHER Reason, ANOTHER Example, and your Opinion restated.

300

Yes or No: Is this a good conclusion paragraph?

In conclusion, ants are amazing insects that do a lot to help nature. They are super strong, great at working together, and help keep the environment clean. Even though some people might not like them, I think ants deserve our respect because they make a big difference in the world.

YES!  This conclusion tells us the author's opinion again, reshares their reasoning, and leaves us thinking about why we should respect ants.

300

What is the reason for this example?

"Ants eat dead insects and leftover food, which keeps the ground clean."

The reason could be that ants help clean up nature.  This example supports the reason by giving more details and facts for the reason.

400

Create an opinion hook based on this prompt:

Ants are amazing insects. They may be small, but they are super strong and can carry things much bigger than themselves. Ants also work together as a team, which I think is really cool. They help each other build nests and find food. Some people might not like ants because they can get into food, but I think they are fascinating creatures. Without ants, the world wouldn't be the same.

You can ask a question, state your opinion, or restate a fact from the passage.

Examples: "I think ants are cool!", "Ants are fascinating insects that work together.", "Did you know that ants eat dead plants?"

400

Yes or No: Is this a good introduction paragraph?

Ants are some of the coolest insects in nature! Even though they are tiny, they do important jobs that help the environment. I believe ants are amazing because they are super strong, great team players, and help keep nature clean.

Yes!  This introduction has a hook, states their opinion on ants, and has the 3 details they will talk about in their body paragraphs.

400

Yes or No: Is this a good introduction paragraph?

Ants are amazing because they are super strong and great team players. First, ants can carry objects much heavier than their own bodies. For example, some ants can lift things that weigh 50 times more than they do! Second, ants are excellent at teamwork. In a colony, different ants have different jobs, like finding food or protecting the nest. Ants work together to make their colony a better place.

YES!  This paragraph states their opinion of ants (strong, team players), states the reason of being strong with an example, states the reason of them working together with an example, and restates their opinion.

400

Yes or No: Is this a good conclusion paragraph?

So yeah, ants are bugs. I think they do some stuff like carry things and live in groups. But I still think they’re kind of annoying and don't really matter much.

NO!  This conclusion does not tell us about the authors' reasoning for why they think ants are annoying or leave us questioning about why ants are/aren't important.

What is the purpose of reasons in essays?

A "reason" explains why the author feels a certain way about a topic. Reasons help support opinions and make writing stronger.
