Kuya gripped my arm as he pulled me from the water. I gasped for breath and was momentarily blinded by the sun. I could hear screaming and shouting but the saltwater of the beach hurt my eyes and I couldn’t open them. My lungs were on fire; I tried to draw in breaths of cool air to quench the fire. Kuya laid me on the rough sandy shore and it was my turn to grip at his arm. I was afraid that if I’ll let go, the water will take me again. I heard the thud of my cousins’ feet running towards me. “Ambit, we’re sorry, we’re sorry! We should not have dared you to go so far from the shore!”

I felt somebody wiping my face with a cool face towel. Somebody urged me to drink water from a bottle while another one shielded my face from the sun. My heart was still racing from what happened as my body shook with the relief of having narrowly missed drowning at the sea.
