What is a fluid?
Fluid- any matter that has no fixed shape, can flow and takes the shape of its container. Any substance in a liquid or gaseous state.
What is matter?
Matter- is anything that has mass and occupies space. All matter has physical and chemical properties.
What are the different types of mixtures?
Mechanical + Solution
What is viscosity?
liquids internal resistance or friction that keeps it from flowing.
Compressed objects tend to lose their shape. True or False
T
What are slurries?
mixture of solids and water
substance in which all the particles are identical. They can be an element or a compound (i.e. helium, water)
Koolaid is a homogeneous solution. True or False.
TRUE
What is density?
Density- mass per unit of volume; g/mL OR kg/L or the measurement of how tightly a material is packed together.
What is compressiblility
Compressibility- extent to which a substance (solid, liquid or gas) can be compressed.
List the properties of fluids
Viscosity
Density
Buoyancy
Compressibility
What is a mixture?
What does a heterogeneous solutions look like?
the different substances are visible in the mixture
Are solids more dense then liquids, if so, why?
Solids are typically more dense because their particles are closer together having less space between particles causing it to be more dense.
What is pressure and what units represent it?
Pressure- measure of the amount of force applied to a given area.
It is measured in pascals (Pa), which is equal to one newton (N) per meter squared (m2).
Why do humans use slurries?
Air is a pure substance. True or False, Explain
False
What is an unsaturated solution?
A solution in which little solute has been added and more can be added
How does temperature affect viscosity and flow rate
Increase temperature = decrease viscosity (flows faster)
Decrease temperature = increase viscosity (flows slower)
List ALL the factors we discussed that affect solubility.
Agitation, Temperature, Surface Area/Size of Pieces
Explain the difference between a saturated and super saturated solution
saturated: Contains the maximum amount of solute that can dissolve in a solvent at a given temperature
super saturated: contains more than the maximum amount of solute that can dissolve
List all of the properties of the particle model of matter
1. All substances made up of tiny particles
2. Always in motion
3. Particles are always attracted or bonded together
4. Particles have spaces between them
What is buoyancy and buoyant force?
Buoyancy- tendency of an object to float when placed in a fluid.
Buoyant Force- upward force that a fluid exerts on an object. Opposite to the pull of gravity.
How does concentration of an object change density. Explain
concentration goes up = density goes up
more solute = more concentration = more particles = they are closer together = higher density
