How does a plant start out?
A plant starts out as a seed.
What do leaves do with sunlight?
Leaves absorb sunlight for energy to make food
What are the three ways seeds are scattered?
Seeds are scattered by wind, water, and animals.
What is the function of the stem?
To transport water and nutrients from the roots to the leaves and to transport food from the leaves down to the roots so that they can grow.
What is a taproot?
A taproot is a large root. It grows deep into the soil. The taproot stores the food for the plant. A carrot (the orange part we eat) is an example of a taproot.
What happens when the seedling begins to grow?
The root grows down and a stem with leaves grows up.
What is the powdery substance that some plants produce to reproduce?
Pollen
What does a seed need to sprout?
It needs air, the right temperature, and enough water.
What is the function of the roots?
The roots of a plant help the soil stay in place so it is not washed away (erosion) during heavy rains. Water and minerals travel up the through the root to the rest of the plant through tubes.
What kind of food travels through the stem?
Sugar
What does the seedling need to grow?
The seedling uses the food stored in the seed to help it grow. It also needs sunlight and water to grow.
Why are the petals of flowers brightly colored?
To attract insects and animals.
What is one feature plants might have that help protect them from danger?
Thorns and stinging hairs can help keep animals from eating the plants.
What is the function of the leaves?
Leaves bring in carbon dioxide from the air (it enters through tiny holes on the under side of the leaf). Inside the leaves, the plant uses the energy from the sun to change the carbon dioxide and water into sugar and oxygen.
What is an example of a type of stem?
Vines are one kind of a stem- they can grow and wrap around objects (like trees or posts) to help support the plant. -A cactus is another kind of stem- the cactus can swell to store water. They shrink as they use the water up. Cactus stems also have a waxy covering that helps keep them from losing water.
How do new seeds grow?
New seeds grow when the flowers are pollinated.
Where are seeds formed?
In the middle of the flower.
Why are bees so important and why are they in danger?
Bees are extremely important because they pollinate flowers. They are in danger because of the overuse of pesticides and chemicals.
