What is the power switch
Holds the spool of thread. Be sure that the thread comes off the top of the spool.
Spool pin or holder
Holds the needle in place. If the needle breaks, loosen (use screwdriver in the accessory box) and remove needle, throw in trash. Take new needle with flat side towards the back and push the needle up into the socket as far as it will go. Tighten the screw so the needle is firmly held in place.

What is the machine face plate
Supports and guides thread from one part to another. Keeps the slack tight and untangled until it gets to the needle. Last thread guide is by the needle. Important to have the thread go through every thread guide.

What is the thread cutter
(not found on manual machines) Lowers the feed dog when sewing buttons. Do not touch.
What is the drop feed dial
Lengthens or shortens the stitch. Normal stitch = 2.5,or on dial between numbers 2 and 3. Normal stitch is between 10-12 stitches per inch. Gathering or basting is 4 stitches per inch.
What is the stitch length dial/touch pad
The base of the sewing machine which the fabric rests on while you sew.
What is the bed
Small metal arm with a hole for thread to go through. Used as a thread guide, moves up and down as the machine operates as it takes the needle up and down from the bobbin to lock each stitch. MUST be at its highest point when starting and stopping the machine. Many machines do this automatically.
What is the thread take up lever
Holds fabric firmly in place for stitching. Raised and lowered by a presser bar lifter at the back of a needle bar. Release lever SLOWLY do not allow it to slam down.

What is the bobbin winder spindle and cutter
When held in place machine sews backwards for backstitching. Backstitching is done to lock the stitches in place at the beginning and ending of sewing.
What is the reverse dial/touch pad
After moving the accessory arm this is used to sew in a circular motion such as legs and sleeves
What is the free arm
Regulates tightness and looseness of thread as it forms a stitch. Normal is 3 - 5 on the dial. Keep it at #4.
What is the tension dial
Foot puts varying degree of pressure on different fabrics as you sew. Normal: 4
What is the pressure foot dial
Where the lower thread comes from. It meets the upper thread and locks the stitch.
What is the bobbin case and bobbin
You can adjust how wide a specialty stitch goes, such as a zigzag
What is a stitch width dial/pad
To the right of the machine head. Used to move the take-up lever up and down. ALWAYS turn it towards you.
What is the hand wheel
Vertical bar that holds the needle. Needle carries upper thread through fabric locking with lower thread from the bobbin. New needles cost .50 cents. Thread the needle from the front to the back.
What is the needle/needle bar
Flat piece under presser foot. Needle points down through slots and feed dog projects upwards through slot. Has numbers 10 and 15 on it to guide edges of fabric. Number 15 is for 5/8 inch garment seam allowances. Number 10 is for 1/2 inch seam allowance.
