Where do the mucous membranes start in the respiratory system?

What is inside the nose and mouth.

100

How many times per minute does air cycle through the lungs?

What is 12-20 times per minute.

100

What is a "self-limiting inflammation of the respiratory tract?

Acute bronchitis, sometimes called a "chest cold" is a self-limiting inflammation of the bronchial tree.

100

What two disorders are categorized as COPD?

What is Chronic Bronchitis and Emphysema.

100

Describe asthma.

What is

Asthma is a chronic disorder of the airways that interferes with the breathing. It may be triggered by external factors such as allergens or pollutants.

200

What is the structure of the lungs well suited for?

What is "fighting off infection"

200

What are the muscles involved in inhalation?

What are the diaphragm, the external intercostals, serratus posterior, and scalenes.

200

What are the risks and accommodations associated with massaging someone with Acute Bronchitis?

Fever is always a contraindication for massage.

Gentle- non-demanding bodywork may be appropriate for someone with acute bronchitis as long as precautions are taken to protect the therapist from infection.

A focus on the breathing muscles, within client tolerance, may improve efficiency of breathing function.

When the client is in recovery, massage therapy may be helpful for fatigue.

200

Clients with chronic bronchitis are suceptible to what risks and how does that affect massage?

What is clients with chronic bronchitis are especially prone to respiratory infections that can rapidly become life-threatening. Any client who is fighting such an infection should delay bodywork until the problem has resolved.

200

What are the associated risks for a person with lung cancer receiving massage?

What is careless bodywork may be overwhelming to a system that has limited capacity for adaptation.

300

What are the wet sticky mucous membranes in the respiratory system responsible for?

What is warming, moistening, and filtering the air that passes by.

300

Which muscle(s) expand the "walls" of the thoracic cavity?

What is the external intercostals and serratus posterior.

300

What are the risks of massaging someone when the feel like they are coming down with a cold?

What is clients who receive a rigorous massage while a cold or flu infection is taking hold may get sicker than if they had delayed.

300

How can massage benefit someone with emphysema?

What is gentle massage (with respect for the possibility of respiratory infection) is appropriate for emphysema patients. Specific work on muscles of the chest, shoulders, and neck can be beneficial if the client can tolerate it.
300

One of the dangers with laryngeal cancer is that the cancer or cancer treatment may damage the epiglottis.  Why is this a concern?

What is the epiglottis is a critical component of a healthy swallowing reflex. If it is damaged, then the risk of aspirating material into the lungs is much higher, and this can lead to dangerous pneumonia.

400

What are the grape shaped clusters of epithelial bubbles (like tiny balloons) surrounded by cardiovascular capillaries?

What are Alveoli.

400

What happens in exhalation?

What is elastic connective tissue fibers in the lungs pull them back to their original size, so relaxed exhalation does not involve muscular activity unless a person invests effort to remove air from the lungs.
400

What condition presents with possible systemic muscle and joint pain, inflamed lymph nodes, irritated GI tract and debilitating fatigue.

What is Influenza.

400

What is emphysema?

What is: the name emphysema means "blown up" as in inflated. This describes what happens to the alveoli as part of the disease process. Long-term exposure to cigarette smoke overcomes the protective abilities of alpha-1 antitrypsin, resulting in the destruction of the alveolar elastin fibers.

When alveoli lose function, gaseous exchange is impaired, leading to reduced oxygen levels in the blood.

500

List the seven of the respiratory system in order from proximal to distal.

What are the

Nasal sinuses

Pharynx

Larynx

Trachea

Bronchus

Bronchiole

Alveoli

500

What muscles are the main players in forced exhalation?

What is the internal intercostals and transverse abdominus.

500

What Infectious Respiratory Disorder is an absolute contraindication for massage?

What is active, untreated tuberculosis.

500

What accommodations need to be made for a client with emphysema?

What is

Positioning may be a challenge, so side-lying, semi-reclined or a massage chair may be more comfortable.

Techniques that focus on the muscles of inspiration and expiration can be especially helpful.  Bodywork that reduces the effort that it takes to breathe can allow patients to feel energized and less fatigued.
