People from Europe who could not afford voyage to colonies. They signed a contract for 3-7 years in exchange for free labor. When their contract was over, they could live in the colonies for free.

Girls helped their mothers take care of the home and helped watch younger children. Boys helped their fathers.

Many died from new diseases brought by the colonists
