what does the quote “This here blacksmith- name of whitey- was the kind of guy that would put that stuff around even if there wasn’t no bugs- just to make sure, see? Tell you what he used to do- at meals he’d peel his boil’ potatoes, an’ he’d take out ever’ little spot, no matter what kind, before he’d eat it. And if there was a red splotch on an egg, he’d scrape it off. Finally quit about the food. That’s the kind of guy he was- clean.” mean?

what is... this quote is very self explanatory, talking about how much of a germophobe whitey was, we know this because Whitey would use bug powder even if there were no bugs, as a preventative measure. This quote is also a character-revealing moment when Candy explains the history of the bunkhouse bed to George, establishing the setting and Whitey's unsettling habits.

what does the quote on pg. 17 mean or why was it significant?

what is... we added this quote because it shows us that adding detail to what’s happening in the story can really help us get a better understanding and to picture it better, making ti less confusing, and to make us feel as if we are there in the moment. The little words that are added like “whitewashed” or “unpainted” set a tone/ mood that wouldn’t be there without those impactful words.
