What is Potential Energy
Stored energy. This happens when an object is not moving. Has the ability to create more energy.
What is a Solid?
The molecules cannot move but instead vibrate. They are stuck together, the most dense of the three phases. Example: Wood
What is a Liquid?
The molecules can move around each other at a medium speed but do not stick. Example: Water
What it is Gas?
The molecules are moving very quickly around each other, very spread out. Will fill any space it is contained in.
Name the phase changes.
Evaporation, Condensation, Freezing, Melting, Ionization, Recombination.
What is Kinetic Energy
Energy in motion. Energy is transferred to an object and causes it to move. Temperature determines the amount of it.
What is it called when a solid turns into a liquid?
Melting
What is it called when a liquid turns into gas?
Evaporation.
What is it called when a gas turns to plasma?
Ionization.
What was happening during our phase change lab when the temperature was constant?
The constant kinetic energy is turning into potential energy.
Give an example of heat.
For example, if you have water at a boil the water has heat molecules that have been heated up and they are moving very quickly.
What is it called when a solid turns into a gas?
Sublimation.
What is it called when a liquid turns into a solid?
Freezing
What is it called when a plasma turns into a gas?
Recombination.
True or False, Two substances can be the same temperatures but different phases.
True
Give an example of temperature.
For example, if you have water at a boil, and you took the temperature of the boiling water it would be at least 212 degrees Fahrenheit. You would be finding the average amount of kinetic energy in the boiling water.
False
When water is melting which direction does the energy flow?
Inside.
What is it called when a gas turns into a liquid?
Condensation.
True or False, Substances can skip faces.
Example: Solid to Gas
True
How does energy move during phase changes?
Energy is transferred moving either out or inside objects.
What phase is Jello?
Jello is a semi solid suspended in a liquid. (Both)
When a liquid is boiling, what are the molecules inside the liquid doing?
The molecules are spaced far apart and moving very quickly.
What is it called when a gas turns into solid?
Vapor deposition.
When do phase changes occur?
Phase changes occur when potential energy turns into kinetic energy.
