DAILY DOUBLE

You are completely unsure how to play the scheduled game of the day, and your co-counselors know either. The campers are looking at you waiting to start. What do you do?

What is: Ask the Junior Counselor that's stationed there, they should have a good grasp. If none are there, you can always ask a site leader, and they will come in and demonstrate a round for you!

500

What is: All allergies of any camper are written on the bottom of your attendance sheet. Get in immediate contact with a site leader and or director and bring the child inside for further evaluation.

500

You have a camper who is completely miserable. It is day three of camp; they refuse to participate in any activities, they cry quietly during morning meeting because they want their mom, and they are actively bringing down the energy of the rest of the group. What is your long-term strategy throughout the day to turn their camp experience around?

What is: Do not force them into the spotlight or punish them for low energy. Instead, use the "Secret Sidekick" strategy. Give them a special, high-status "staff helper" job that keeps them distracted and feeling important (e.g., “Hey, I need an official scorekeeper for this game,” or “Can you help me carry the art supplies?”). You could also pair them up during free play with one of your most empathetic, welcoming campers to naturally build a friendship peer-to-peer. Keep communication open with the Director so the parents can be updated on their progress at the end of the day!
