Explain how a hydro pump dam works.

The water is released from a high reservoir.  The gravitational potential energy of the water is transformed into kinetic energy by the spinning turbine. The kinetic energy of the spinning turbine is transformed into electrical energy by a generator.  The water is caught at the bottom, and pumped back into the high reservoir by excess electrical energy.

If a pendulum starts at a height of 1m, will it ever reach a height of 2m?  Explain your answer in terms of energy.

No - the ball only has enough gravitational kinetic energy to reach a height of 1m.  As energy cannot be created out of nothing, it needs to be transferred more energy to swing higher.
