100
what are two advantages of the SI?
international communication and ease of conversion because the SI is a base 10 system
100
what is a measurement?
A measurement is a comparison between an unknown quantity and a standard
100
What are significant digits?
all of the valid digits in a measurement. They include all of the marked increments and one estimated value.
100
What is the difference between an independent and a dependent variable?
The experimenter is in control of the independent variable. The dependent variable is the result of the changes in the independent variable.
100
What is the scientific method?
A systematic method of observing, experimenting and analyzing information to answer questions about the natural world.
200
How is the SI regulated? ( name the two organizations)
It is regulated by the International Bureau of Weights and Measures and the National Institute of Science and Technology.
200
What is the difference between accuracy and precision?
Accuracy is in reference to how close the value is to the correct or accepted value. Precision is in reference to how repeatable a value is.

Either give the Atlantic pacific rule or the three rules that are used to determine the number of significant digits.
If the decimal point is absent begin counting after the first nonzero on the atlantic side. If the decimal is present begin counting after the first nonzero on the pacific side. 1.nonzeros are significant 2. zeros between nonzeros are significant 3. zeros trailing nonzeros after a decimal only are significant
200
Where are the independent and dependent variables placed on a graph?
Independent on the x and dependent on the y axis.

A Honda Civic is approaching a red light. A Ferrari is stopped at the red light. As soon as the Civic reaches the intersection the light turns green. If the civic was moving at 10 m/s and then pushes the accelerator to 4 m/s^2, and the Ferrari pushes the accelerator to 10 m/s^2. Who would win a 500 meter race?
The Ferrari gets there 3 seconds ahead.
300
What is a derived unit?
It is a combination of base units
300
What is two point calibration?
A method for checking the accuracy of an instrument
300
Describe how you would determine the number of significant digits when multiplying or dividing measured values. Perform the following calculation: (7.03 x 10^4 ) / ( 1.2 x 10^3)
report the smallest number of sig figs in either the quotient or divisor. 5.9 x 10^1
300
What is the line of best fit?
The line that is drawn as close as possible to all of the data points as possible. The line of best fit is used for predictions.
300
convert 90km/hour to m/s
25 m/s
400
convert 100 nm to kilometers
1 x 10^-10 km
400
What is a parallax?
The apparent shift in the position of an object when viewed from a different angle.
400
Correctly identify the number of significant digits in the following measurements. a.) 0.005010 b.) 105,000 c.) 1.050 x 10^-2 d.) 6.000000 x10^3
a.) 4 b.) 3 c.) 4 d.) 7
400
give the equation for the following relationships: a.) linear b.) inverse c.) quadratic
a.) y = mx + b b.) y = a/x c.) y = ax^2 + bx + c
400
What is the precision of an instrument?
one half the smallest division of the instrument
500
What are the seven base units and the associated dimension
meter- length second- time temperature- kelvin amount of substance- mole luminous intensity - candela mass- kilogram electric current - ampere
500
correctly give the following measurement with the correct level of uncertainty.
25.7 +/- 0.25 cm
500
Describe how you would determine the correct number of significant digits when adding or subtracting a measured value. Perform the following calculation: (7.03 x 10^4) - ( 1.25 x 10^3)
you report to the common place value. 6.90 x 10^1 or 69.0

An investigator wants to find how speed varies with time. She determines the speed at various times and plots the information in a graph. What are the units of the slope?
m/s^2

the pressure on a surface is equal to the force divided by the area. A woman exerts a force (weight) of 520 newtons on the floor. If the pressure on the floor 32,500 N/m^2, what is the area of the soles of her shoes?
0.016m^2
