What three things do plants need to grow?

Light, Air and Water

100

Where are they typically found?

Forests, deserts, grasslands, freshwater and marine  and extreme conditions, arctic, alpine are all habitats to plants.

100

What are some characteristics of the Plantae Kingdom? (About cells)

  • Eukaryotic and multicellular.

  • Cellulose walls and big central vacuole. because they are plant cells.

  • Plants have chloroplast and chlorophyll pigment, which is needed for photosynthesis.

100

What is a positive impact they have on the population?

  • Photosynthesis = produces many foods including fruits, vegetables, and grains that both humans and a variety of animal species can rely on for consummation.

  • Main source of energy for many animals who themselves are a main source of energy to many others, and the chain continues like that.

What did the CCA Recently research about? (Talked about in the presentation)

  • Significant threats to plant health in Canada and their implications for sustainability and food security.

    • How crucial plants are for Canada’s economy and food security

    • However, with climate change, things are getting tough with more extreme weather patterns, and pest outbreaks which are becoming more common.

    • The study also suggests working together with governments, indigenous communities, and other stakeholders to tackle this issue.

200

What is an example of an organism that falls under the Plantae kingdom?

Grass, moss, roses, sunflowers, trees etc.

200

How do the plantae kingdom eat?

They make their own food and hence are called autotrophs (an organism that can produce its own food using light, water, carbon dioxide, or other chemicals.)

200

What are 3 categories the plantae kingdom is categorized in?

Plant body: Existence or lack of a distinct plant structure.  E.g. Root, Stem and Leaves.

Vascular system: Existence or lack of a vascular system for the transportation of water and other substances. E.g. Phloem and Xylem.

Seed formation: Existence or lack of flowers and seeds and if the seeds are naked or enclosed in a fruit.

200

What is a positive impact they have on our daily lives?

  • Source to breathe. (Plants do this through their leaves when they absorb carbon dioxide for the process of photosynthesis which we breath out and then by releasing a gas called oxygen which we use to breath.)

  • Plants are also proven to help with mental and physical health by reducing stress and anxiety levels and being a main ingredient in creating many medicines like aspirin.

Some members of plants lack chlorophyll and therefore show heterotrophic modes of nutrition such as?

Parasitic Nutrition: These plants grow on other host plants and completely or partially derive nutrition from them with the help of sucking roots called haustoria. (Mistletoe)

Insectivorous Nutrition:  Some photosynthetic plants grow on soil that lacks nitrogen and hence they feed on insects to satisfy their nitrogen requirement. (Venus Fly Trap)

300

What is the name of the process that plants have to do to create food for themselves?

Photosynthesis

300

How do they reproduce?

They reproduce both asexually and sexually.

300

What are the 4 ways the plantae kingdom moves?

Lack of locomotion: Plants are generally immobile unlike animals and they do not move from one place to another. But they can exhibit limited movement.

Tropism: Is directional growth movements in response to stimuli such as light (phototropism) and gravity (gravitropism).

Nastic movements: Non- directional responses (e.g, opening and closing of flowers or the rapid movement of leaves in Mimosa Pudica.)

Growth Movement: Root and shoot growth in response to environmental factors.

300

What is a Negative impact they have on the population?

  • Invasive plants can also cause harm to humans (thorn plants)

  • Increasing the risk of a car accident because of their growth rate which results in the visibility of drivers to be lessened when driving.

300

What is the economic Impact the plantae kingdom has?

Plants contribute nearly 3% of Canada's GDP (gross domestic product).
