The different plate boundaries maintain the Earth's equilibrium by creating and destroying the Earth's crust. At a divergent boundary new crust is created because the magma is rising from the asthenosphere through the lithosphere. Then, the old crust on that plate that is being pushed away from the mid-ocean ridge collides with another plate. The collision causes the denser plate to sink beneath the other plate. This lithosphere is pushed into the convection current in the Asthenosphere and is pushed through the other plate causing a volcano.
How do the processes taking place at and below the lithosphere allow Earth to maintain geologic equilibrium?
300
Convection Currents in the Asthenosphere causes the magma to rise, this causes the plates to separate
What causes Divergent Boundaries?

Ocean-Continental = Trench, Volcanic Arc Ocean-Ocean = Trench, Island Arc Continental-Contiental = Non-Volcanic Moutains
What are the features created by each type of Convergent Boundary?
300
Mostly around divergent boudaries
Where do you usually find transform boundaries?
300
Volcanic Arc formed from an Ocean-Continental Convergent Boundary
What is Andes Mts.?

A section of the Lithosphere that moves, can be Oceanic or Continental crust
What is a plate?

As the magma rises and the plates separate the magma in between the plates collapses (Tectonic Dancing)
How does a rift valley form?
400
When Oceanic and Continental crust or Oceanic and Oceanic crust come together the more dense crust subducts under the less dense crust, forming a trench.

The age of the sea floor gets older and older from the center, indicating that the lithosphere is spreading apart
How does the age of the sea floor support divergent boundaries?
500
When Continental and Continental crust collide, the crust is pushed up and forms non-volcanic mountains.
How do non-volcanic mountains form?
500
The age of the sea floor above the boundary is not aligned with the age of the sea floor underneath the boundary
How does the age of the sea floor support transform boundaries?

The Big Bang Theory created the Universe, creating galaxies and star. A Supernova star created the solar system, creating Earth by Accretion. Accretion cause the Earth to have uneven heating in the interior, causing convection currents. Convection currents cause magma to rise and plates to move.
How does the Big Bang Theory effect plate boundaries?
