What is the name of the supercontinent?
Pangea is an ancient supercontinent.
100
How do plates move at convergent boundaries?
Plates move TOGETHER at convergent boundaries.
100
Stress will build to cause an earthquake if friction along the fault is: a. high b. low
Stress will build to cause an earthquake if friction along the fault is high.
100
Name the four layers of the earth in order from outside to inside.
Crust, mantle, outer core, inner core
100
What causes a tsunami?
A tsunami is caused by an underwater earthquake.
200
What causes the plates to move?
Convection currents in the mantle cause the plates to move.
200
How do plates move at divergent boundaries?
Plates move apart at divergent boundaries.
200
What is the name for a break in the Earth's crust caused by movement?
A fault is a break in the earth's crust.
200
What layer of the earth is the hottest?
The inner core is the hottest layer of the earth.
200
Explain how volcanoes are both destructive and constructive.
Volcanoes are constructive because they create land and fertile soil. Volcanoes are destructive because they create toxic fumes, fires and lava slides.
300
What theory explains the causes of earthquakes and volcanoes?
The theory of plate tectonics explains causes of earthquakes and volcanoes.
300
How do plates move at transform boundaries?
Plates slide past each other at transform boundaries.
300
Along what type of boundary do most earthquakes occur?
Most earthquakes occur along transform boundaries.
300
What type of boundary creates ridges and rift valleys?
Ridges and rift valleys are formed by divergent boundaries.
300
What is the name of the plate boundary around the pacific plate that generates so many volcanoes?
The Ring of Fire
400
What type of boundary is the San Andreas Fault?
The San Andreas fault is a transform boundary.
400
Name the two things that can happen at a convergent boundary.
When there is oceanic and continental crust coming together, the oceanic dives below and volcanoes form along the boundary. (Ring of Fire) When there are two continental crusts coming together they push up and a mountain is formed. (Himalayas)
400
What type of boundary results in sea floor spreading?
Sea floor spreading occurs at divergent boundaries where plates are moving apart and new sea floor crust is created.
400
What layer of the earth is the most dense?
The inner core is the densest layer.
400
According to plate tectonics, what is happening to the size of the Atlantic ocean?
The Atlantic Ocean is growing.
500
Name the four pieces of evidence for plate tectonics.
1. Puzzle pieces 2. Rock types 3. Fossils 4. Climate
500
Name the two things that can happen at divergent boundaries.
When two oceanic crusts pull apart there is sea floor spreading and a ridge is formed. When continental crust pulls apart a rift valley is created.
500
Describe how the Hawaiian islands are formed.
The Hawaiian island are formed because of hot spots. Magma pokes through weak parts of the crust and flows up until an island is created. When the plate moves the island is cut off from the magma but a new hole can be poked in the crust to form another island. The result is a chain of islands.
500
If new land is forming out of earth's volcanoes, why isn't the earth getting larger?
The earth is not getting larger because there are convergent boundaries where crust pushes up to create mountains or a subduction zone forms where crust dives down and is destroyed.
500
What happens at a subduction zone?
At a subduction zone one plate dives down under the other into the mantle and a trench forms.
