A type of literature that expresses ideas, feelings, or tells a story in a specific form (usually using lines and stanzas)
What is poetry?
A word at the end of one line rhymes with a word at the end of another line
What is end rhyme?
Words that imitate the sound they are naming
What is onomatopoeia?
A comparison using "like" or "as"
What is a simile?
a sound, word, phrase, or line that is repeated regularly
What is repetition?
The author of a peom
What is a poet?
the pattern of rhymes used in a poem, usually marked by letters to symbolize rhymes (e.g. ababbcc)
What is rhyme scheme?
the beat created by the sounds of the words in a poem
What is rhythm?
an animal is given human-like qualities or an object is given life-like qualities
What is personification?
words that sound alike because the share the same ending vowel AND consonant sounds
What is rhyme?
the "narrator" of a poem
What is the speaker?
A poem that does not have any repeating patterns, meter, or rhyme scheme
What is free verse?
consonant sounds repeated at the beginnings of words
What is alliteration?
language that appeals to any of the five senses
What is imagery/sensory language?
appearance of the words on the page
What is form?
A two-line stanza
What is a couplet?
A word inside a line rhymes with another word on the same line
What is internal rhyme?
Repeated vowel sounds in a line or lines of poetry
What is assonance?
exaggeration often used for emphasis
What is hyperbole?
When a person, place, thing, or event that has meaning in itself also represents, or stands for, something else.
What is symbolism?
A four-line stanza
What is a quatrain?
When words share EITHER the same vowel or consonant sound BUT NOT BOTH
What is slant/near rhyme?
repeated consonants sounds WITHIN words
What is consonance?
a reference to something famous or well-known
What is allusion?
a pattern of stressed and unstressed syllables that create rhythm
What is meter?
