Jameson strolls out of his room at 10:05PM. He asks if he can visit his cousin in a nearby dorm to get a phone charger. How do you respond?

Emphasize that youth can’t leave their apartment after headcount in a loving but firm way. Possibly redirect him to other times in the day where he could have grabbed the phone charger. If it is absolutely necessary, contact your AC for assistance.

“Arrive early enough to be seated… ask your youth to get out their scriptures, FSY handbooks, and a pen before the opening prayer. Remind them to keep their materials out until after the closing prayer. To promote reverence, stay standing and keep an eye on the youth until the session coordinator stands to get the meeting started. Sit with your company and learn from the session adviser. Take notes and prepare possible questions to ask during R&R.”

Layla walks up to you (CN) during quiet time and her mom is on the phone. She is concerned with how she has been treated this week at FSY. Layla’s mom is asking to speak to her counselor. What do you do?

Tell Layla that you can’t speak to her mother over the phone and that she should call Site Office. Text your AC to let them know.

“As soon as you get back to your rooms at night, make sure all your youth are accounted for, and report to your AC using the app. Review and remind your youth of the following: close all window blinds and do not leave the floor/building or go to vending machines after headcount. Do not end R&R early trying to allow youth extra time to shower.”

How to treat other individuals on SSU campus not with FSY

With kindness, compassion, and positivity! Be a disciple of Jesus Christ!

At lunch, Jake and Alex start talking about politics at the table with the entire company present. You overhear Jake and Alex starting to argue about their political opinion. You are further down the table and your CO is on duty. The other youth in your company look visibly uncomfortable. What would you do?

Immediately get involved and de-escalate the situation. Directly address that their topic of choice is inappropriate for FSY. Remind them of the FSY Purpose and the Standards of Conduct they agreed to before coming to FSY and in Meet Your Counselor. If the situation continues to escalate or repeats, contact your AC for help!

“… is the first time you meet and interact with your youth. This is an opportunity to help them catch the vision of FSY with its opportunities and experiences. Clearly discuss standards, rules, and ways you will handle concerns so that they know what is expected of them. Remember, the youth need you to be a leader and mentor first, teacher second, and friend third.”

During Flex Time, the on-duty staff are actively helping youth with an activity. You are walking back to the dorms for your break and a singular youth approaches you visibly bothered and asks to walk back to the dorms with you. What do you do?

Immediately call your (or any) AC, SC, or WC and put them on speaker phone. Explain to the youth the “Rule of 3” and that you must contact another FSY Staff member. Keep a safe distance from the youth and quickly try to get another staff member present.

“Stay in the hallway or a location where you can monitor the participants’ rooms and make sure they don’t leave the floor. Do not use this time to shower, make phone calls, or be in your room.”

You, Ellie, and Sarah are walking to lunch from classes. Ellie mentions how she felt disconnected from the last class because they talked about families. Ellie mentions how she doesn’t feel loved at home, but doesn’t say much else. What would you do next?

Ask Ellie, possibly not around Sarah, what she meant by her comment of not feeling loved at home. Depending on Ellie’s response, an Incident Report may or may not be needed. We want clarification, but not an investigation. ***"What do you mean by that?"
