Whenever a police officer intervenes in a matter for which a protection order may be sought under this Act, the police officer shall, as soon as possible take the following steps: 

ASSISTANCE TO VICTIMS OF DOMESTIC VIOLENCE

Where a victim of domestic violence expresses concern for his/her safety, the police officer shall assist the victim in getting to a place of safety; 

Where a victim of domestic violence requests it, a police officer shall protect a victim by accompanying the victim when he/she takes his/her personal belongings from a place where the respondent may reside; 

Where a victim indicates that he/she has suffered injuries though not visible, which require medical assistance, the police officer shall assist the victim to obtain medical treatment as soon as possible 

Advise the victim of domestic violence on the importance of preserving the evidence; 

Inform the victim as to his/her rights and of services which may be available to assist him/her, be they government or private
