What are the steps you should take when an earthquake occurs at camp?

- Duck, Cover, Hold on until the shaking has stopped

- Evacuate to Safe Haven #1 or #2 (if #1 is unavailable)

- An individual who (typically works with children in a professional capacity) is legally obligated to report suspected child abuse or neglect to the appropriate authorities.

- Anytime [you &] your team is outside of the Youth Center and you need to send a child in (restroom, jacket, water, put something away, need equipment or materials, etc.)

What are forms of neglect?

- Lack of supervision, inappropriate housing, inadequate provision of food/clothing for the season, abandonment, denial of medical care, inadequate hygiene, etc.

- Staff in the front > all children in the middle in a line > staff at the back of the line.

A child hit their head on the playground.  What are your next steps?

What should you do in the event of a fire?

- Remove children from area

- If manageable, grab a fire extinguisher and do the PASS method, then call 9-1-1.

- If unmanageable, call 9-1-1 immediately and alert office staff.

What are some forms of physical abuse?

- Hitting, kicking, slapping, punching, hair pulling, choking, shoving, whipping, shaking, burning, etc.

How many snacks does the program provide?  Are we allowed to open up closed snack boxes and give children whatever snack they desire? 

- 1, in the afternoon.  Morning snack is not provided by us.

- No, we need to stick to the snack calendar!  Extra snacks can be taken from the overflow snack bin.

What things should you check each child for before leaving on a fieldtrip?

- Do they have:

A camp shirt, closed-toed shoes, did they bring a lunch/water, did they bring money?

If you do not recognize the adult picking up a camper, what do you do?

- You can say: "I don’t believe I’ve seen you pick up [child's name] before. May I ask your name and see your ID, just to confirm you’re on the authorized pick-up list? Thank you!"

What are the steps for a lockdown while at camp?

- Gather all children into the Community Center (CC)

- Available staff lock all doors/close blinds/close doors leading to the CC/hide children behind the barrier/encourage them to stay quiet.

What are forms of emotional abuse?

- Yelling, screaming, name calling, shaming, telling them they are bad/worthless/a mistake, ignoring, failure to provide the affection and support necessary for the development of a child's emotional well-being.

- Be safe, Be kind, Be positively involved.

Where do staff sit on the bus?

- Alone in an emergency exit or in a row with 1 child.

Is a staff member ever allowed to be alone with a child or tween?

- NO!

- Staff should never be alone with a child or tween.  There should always be 1:2 whether it is 1 child:2 staff OR 2 children:1 staff.

- If you have 1 child left during pick-ups, please merge with another team.

What should you do in an active shooter situation?

- Use your best judgment/take defensive actions.

- Gather all children into the Youth Center (YC), move into the attic, lock-up/close blinds/close doors leading towards the attic/turn off lights/block attic entrance/stay quiet.

If you suspect child abuse at camp, what are the steps to filing a report?

- If you feel comfortable enough, you can ask the child these 5 questions only:

1) What happened?

2) Who did this to you?

3) Where were you when this happened?

4) When did this happen?

5) Is this person at home?

- If you need assistance, please speak directly with office staff about your concern. 

- We encourage the staff who suspects the abuse to talk/question the child directly because the child may feel more comfortable with you compared to an administrator jumping in and taking over.

What to do if you have lost a camper while on a fieldtrip?

- Keep a staff member with the rest of the campers, notify lead staff/security for assistance, question who has seen them last, return to last location seen, search until found.

What is appropriate & inappropriate touch for children & staff?

- Appropriate: Side hugs, hand holding, picking up children when extremely hurt, high-fives, fist bumps, etc. 

- Inappropriate: Full frontal hugs, children sitting on your lap, hugging from the back, piggy back rides, rough housing/play fighting, anything involving private parts (including a child who needs help buttoning their pants - always ask for another staff to watch you & have the child pull their button out so you are not touching their body.)
