When a guest speaker arrives or a field trip is happening, how can you prepare the children?

Prepare children by reviewing expectations before the guest speaker arrives or before leaving for a field trip. Discuss appropriate behaviour, listening skills, safety rules, and how to show respect. Let children know what to expect, encourage them to ask questions, and remind them that they represent KidHub while participating in the activity. Setting clear expectations ahead of time helps ensure a positive experience for everyone.

You are bringing your group inside from outside play when a child trips, falls, and appears to have a broken arm. What should you do?

Stay calm and reassure the child. A serious injury can be frightening, so helping the child remain calm is important. Avoid moving the injured arm and stabilize it using a sturdy object such as a clipboard, ice pack, or LEGO board. Secure the arm to the support to prevent further movement. Notify management immediately, provide details of the incident, and follow procedures for contacting the child's parents/guardians and arranging further medical care if needed.

400

What do you do if you have a child that doesn't want to leave the park and it is time to go back?

Give the child advance warnings before it is time to leave (for example, a 10-minute and 5-minute reminder). When it is time to go, stay calm and acknowledge their feelings: "I know you're having fun and don't want to leave." Offer choices when possible, such as choosing one last activity or helping lead the group back. Be firm and consistent with expectations that everyone must leave together. If the child continues to refuse, ensure the group is supervised and seek support from another staff member or management if needed. Never leave a child behind or allow them to stay at the park without supervision.
