Attending monthly PC meetings, be prepared for meetings-review consent agenda, participate in interviews/hiring, approve goals and objectives, review and approve program wide school readiness goals, make recommendation and approve program options, participate in periodic reviews of selection, enrollment, and recruitment criteria, inform the Policy Council group of center happenings and inform your center of Policy Council information, review and approve policies, review and approve grant applications are all examples

Policy Council must adhere to our own set.  Articles in this include Policy Council purpose, membership, officer election processes and responsibilities, committees, meeting protocols, and policy council functions.  These should be reviewed and updated as needed.

What are Policy Council By-Laws?

A packet of information that is sent out ahead of the meeting. Members have an opportunity to review the packet and come to the meeting prepared with any questions.  Include is, minutes from previous meeting, Board of Director minutes, program calendar, approved personal actions, finance/credit card reports, and information memorandums from the office of Head Start. This packet is approved in one action rather than going through item by item.

What is a Quorum?

Policy Council Members are integral in hiring new staff.  A Policy Council member is always asked to sit in on interviews for open positions and give feedback and recommendations on the hiring process.  In addition, the entire Policy Council will be contacted by a member of the Children’s Services Admin team to approve a recommended new hire.  Policy Council will also be included when a staff person is recommended for termination.
