Stages of the DTM
100
Map #3 These are the continents with the most densely populated countries.
What are Europe and Asia?
100
These are characteristics of Stage 1 countries and examples of countries currently in this stage.
What is high birth and death rates and a low population? Examples of a country in this stage (MC) Stage 1 – No countries, maybe a few isolated tribes
100
These are the two characteristics a pyramid uses for data. (bonus on test)
What are age and gender?
100
These are the definitions of Push and Pull factors.
What are: Push Factor - a negative perception about a location that induces a person to move away from that location. Pull Factor- a positive perception about a location that induces a person to move there.
100
These are the reasons why the birth rates are high in Stages 1 and 2 of the DTM.
What are: sign of virility no birth control large families needed for hunting/gathering & farming high infant mortality rate - so have lots of children in hopes a good number survive needed children to take care of elderly parents lack of education
200
Map #1 - These states show the largest population growth from 1980 to 1990.
What are: California, Arizona, Alaska, Nevada, and Florida?
200
These are the characteristics of a Stage 2 country and examples of countries currently in this stage.
What is high birth rates and falling death rates and a rapidly growing population? Examples of a country in this stage (MC) Stage 2 – Many African and Asian Countries – Haiti, Kenya, Burma, Chad, Somalia, Sudan
200
This pyramid has a large base indicating high birth rates and a short top indicating high death rates.
What is Stage 1?
200
These are SOCIAL Push and Pull Factors.
What are: Push - sexism, racism, persecution (religious, gender, ethnic) Pull - personal freedoms (speech, religion, sexual orientation), education for children, women's education
200
These are the reasons why the death rate is so high in Stage 1 of the DTM.
What are: high infant mortality rate disease - lack of health care, medicine, technology no stable food supply, violence
300
Map #2 - These are the most populated regions in the United States.
What are:Northeast Coast, Pacific Southwest Coast, Great Lakes, and the Florida Peninsula?
300
These are the characteristics of Stage 3 and countries currently in this stage.
What is falling birth rates and low death rates and a growing population? Examples: USA, Brazil, China, India
300
This pyramid is cone shaped with more people living longer.
What is Stage 3?
300
These are three types of ENVIRONMENTAL Push and Pull factors.
What are: Push - Pollution, natural disaster, climate, lack of clean water, soil erosion, deforestation Pull - clean water, climate, less pollution, sanitation systems, good soil
300
These are reasons for the death rates beginning to fall in Stage 2 of the DTM.
What are: stable food supply increase in medicine and hygiene knowledge more education health services lower infant mortality rate people living longer
400
Map #4 - Three countries that are distored on this map compared to a typical world map.
What are....Answers will vary 1) Canada – on a typical world map Canada has a large land area – on a population cartogram Canada almost disappears. It is just a collection of small “islands” above the United States 2) Italy – on a typical world map Italy is shaped like a recognizable boot - on a population cartogram Italy’s size is distorted and you can barely recognize the “boot” shape 3) China – on a typical world map China is large but dwarfs in size when compared to Russia, the country to its North. On the population cartogram China has ballooned in size and takes up the space that originally was Russia
400
These are the characteristics of Stage 4 and 2 countries currently in this stage.
What is has low birth rates and death rates in which towards the end of the stage the death rates begin to raise higher than birth rates? Examples: Japan, Germany, Western Europe
400
This pyramid has a very thin base indicating fewer children, and large middle region and a very high top indicating that people are living longer. In this pyramid there are more adults than children.
What is Stage 4?
400
These are three types of ECONOMIC Push and Pull factors.
What are: Push - lack of jobs, valueless money, depression/recession, poverty Pull - better jobs, higher paying jobs, jobs for women, money that holds its value, standard of living, educational opportunities, banks
400
These are reasons why the birth rates begin to fall in Stage 3 of the DTM.
What are: children become an economic liability in an industrial society birth control/contraceptives are available child survival rates are better - no need for having lots of children no need for a large family better healthcare emancipation of women economic advancement desire for material lifestyle
500
Map #3 - These are the reasons that mroe densley populated areas ARE or ARE NOT a threat to less densley populated areas.
What is .... ARE a threat - The more densly populated areas may become overpopulated and begin to migrate into the less densley populated areas in search of more land, resources, etc... OR the more densely populated areas are more likely to pollute the environment and use up fossil fuels leaving the cleaner, less densley populated ares with less resources and more population. ARE NOT a threat - the more densley populated areas are slef sufficient and don't need the less densely populated areas. The less densely populated areas may need help from the more densley populated areas.
500
This is the definition of the DTM.
What is The demographic transition model shows how a population will change over time as it changes from an agrarian society to an industrial and post-industrial one?
500
This population pyramid has a smaller base than Stage 1 indicating a high birth rate and is slightly taller at the top indicating a lower death rate.
What is Stage 2?
500
Three examples of POLITICAL Push& Pull Factors.
What are: Push - war, violence, persecution, lack of voting rights Pull - independence, Freedoms, Healthcare, Stable government, justice, safety?
500
These are three reasons why the death rates remain low in Stages 3 and 4 of the DTM.
What are: pension system living longer due to geriatric care preventative services good food supply better pediatric care improved diets
