This needs to be present in the chart in the patient's post-op orders to help guide staff regarding when the surgical dressing SHOULD be changed

These medications are contraindicated post bowel surgery.
What are laxatives?
Patient appears to be restless and anxious. That are tachycardic and tachypneic.
What are signs of Hypoxemia?
Activity expectations, nutritional and fluid needs, follow-up appointments, medication information.
What is Discharge Planning?
Immobility, trauma, age >60 years, obesity.
What are risk factors for developing a DVT?
Patient is reporting increased pain at incision site and fever. Upon assessment, dressing has moderate shadowing and redness visible approximately 5cm around incision site with swelling.
What is Signs of Infection?
Early mobilization, fluid intake, early advancement of the post-operative diet as tolerated.
What re nursing interventions to prevent constipation?
When patient's are immobile in bed post operatively and do not take part in deep breathing exercises; they are at risk for this condition (can affect a portion or entire lobe of lung).
What is atelectasis?
The first sense that returns when waking post-anesthesia.
What is Hearing?
Frothy pink sputum, hypertension, edema of the peripherals and face.
What is Fluid Overload?
Bright yellow to dark green drainage, acidic odour, thick consistency.
What is Expected drainage from a T-Tube drain?
As per the ERAS protocol; patients should be doing this post-op to prevent ileus.
What is Chewing sugar-free Gum?
Decreased LOC and eating meals in bed can increase a patient's risk for this.
What is aspiration pneumonia?
4 hours post-op, temp 35.2, decreased LOC, bradycardia, pale and cyanotic extremities.
What is post-op Hypothermia?
Patient is complaining of tachypnea, dyspnea, and feeling anxious and restless. VS present hypotension and tachycardia.
What is Pulmonary Embolism?
This must be maintained on all drainage devices in order to ensure they are functioning properly and extracting fluid from the surgical site.
What is Negative Pressure drain suction?
Complication that can occur when the body is deprived of nutrients for an extended period leading to rapid shifts in electrolyte imbalances and fluid shifts; Post bariatric surgery and malnourished patients at risk for this.
What is re-feeding syndrome?
Irritation from endotracheal tube leading to inspiratory stridor, sternal retraction, acute respiratory distress
What is Laryngospasm?
Patient waking post-op experiencing restlessness, agitation, disorientation, thrashing and shouting; commonly caused by hypoxemia and seen mostly in pediatric and older patients.
What is a Emergence Delirium?
Peripheral neuropathy, peripheral vascular disease, skin breakdown, skin grafts or traumatic wounds on lower extremities
Place sterile saline soaked gauze, cover with a sterile ABD pad, keep patient NPO, monitor for signs of shock, and call surgeon immediately.
What is the appropriate nursing action for Wound Evisceration?
Worsening nausea, abdominal distension and pain, vomiting and decreased bowel sounds can be a sign of this.
What is Paralytic Ileus?
