The Periodic Table organizes ___________ into groups.
Elements
How many Oxygen atoms are in O2?
Two oxygen atoms!
What is a reactant?
The elements/compounds that you start with before the reaction!
What is the charge of a proton?
Positive!
What is a chemical symbol?
A letter, or two, that symbolizes the name of the element.
Name the element with an atomic number of 56.
Barium (Ba)
Is H2O2 a molecule, compound, or both?
Both!
Molecules: Groups of atoms
Compounds: Groups of atoms that are different
What is a product?
The new substance that was created when bonds between atoms broke and new ones were made!
What is the charge of a neutron?
No charge! Neutral!
What is a subscript?
The small number at the bottom of the chemical symbol that tells you the number of atoms in a molecule/compound.
Write the chemical symbol for these five elements:
Carbon
Boron
Oxygen
Helium
Hydrogen
C
B
O
He
H
Why is Cl5 just a molecule and not a compound?
Cl5 is not a compound because it is a group of the Chlorine atoms. All of the atoms are the same type with the same number of protons (17). An atom with 17 protons will always be Chlorine. This makes it just a molecule because it is a group of atoms of the same element.
How do you know when a chemical reaction has occurred?
When something new is formed and a bond was broken/created between atoms.
What is the charge of an electron?
Negative
What is an atom?
The basic building block for all matter!
What two elements make up most of the Earth's atmosphere?
Nitrogen and Oxygen
What do molecules and compounds have in common?
They are atoms that are bonded (grouped) together.
The group with the most number of completions wins.
What makes up the Nucleus and where is it located?
Protons and Neutrons make up the Nucleus, and it is in the center of the atom.
Why do the number of protons make an element unique?
The number of protons in an atom identifies the atom. We can see this on the periodic table because the atomic number is the number of protons. No two elements have the same number of protons.
Find the element that has an atomic number of 16.
Sulfur
How many total atoms are below? Once you figure out, figure out how many atoms you have of each element.
C2H4O2
NaHCO3
Carbon (C): 3
Hydrogen (H): 5
Oxygen (O): 5
Sodium (Na): 1
What were the two mystery compounds we combined to make a chemical reaction before break?
Baking soda and White Distilled Vinegar!
Where are the electrons located?
Around the nucleus.
Why can't you trust an atom?
They make up LITERALLY everything!
