Parent/Guardian must sign them out with a Supervisor. Supervisor will check their ID to ensure they are on the approved pick up list.

For a SERIOUS injury: should a camper be transported to the hospital in your car, or by ambulance via 911?

Call 911 for an ambulance. NEVER transport any campers in your car, ever

No! Only provided food can be given to campers. There are too many allergies, and parents have not given permission for their child to have this.

NO! PPD Camps staff CANNOT provide this care. 

All campers must be independent. Parents will be called if they need assistance.

Your 12 year old campers are talking about who should be president and current issues within the Supreme Court. What do you do?

Redirect the conversation to something else. This is not appropriate conversation for camp.

A camper is playing on the playground and just hit their head hard on a metal beam. A bump/bruise is already forming. What do you do?

Staff trained in First Aid will provide care (ice, concussion check)

Immediately inform a supervisor

A camper has a seizure. They have no known seizure history. What do you do?

-start timing it

-notify supervisor and call 911

-remove other campers from the area

-prevent them from injury (keep things away from their head)

-stay with them, do not restrain them or place things in their mouth

-if they stop breathing, a trained staff person should begin CPR

-supervisors will notify parents

-incident forms will be filled out

You suspect your camper is being abused at home.  (They have told you this, or they have unusual bruises, or anything else suspicious) What do you do?

Notify your supervisor and Director. They will assist you with next steps and reporting it to DCFS. Do not question the camper.

-obtain first aid/EMS if needed

-immediately report to your supervisor

-with your supervisor/director, file an employee incident report 

-if needed, seek additional medical treatment after report has been filed to the Administrative Office for workmans comp

What is the policy for staff cell phone use during camp?

NOT ALLOWED! Staff cannot have their phone with them at all

Camps will collect your phone in a secure location. THIS is your first warning. Using your phone will result in being sent home without pay. A second offense will lead to immediate termination.

What is the staff to camper ratio while at camp for:

Ages 5?

Ages 6-8?

Ages 9+?

5 =  1 staff to 6 campers

6-8 =   1 staff to 8 campers

9+ = 1 staff to 10 campers

At your camp site- you do a head count and determine a camper is missing from your group. What do you do?

-Quickly look around your area, ask campers if they saw the missing camper

-Notify the supervisors, check if they have seen the camper

-If it is determined the camper is missing, announce "CODE ADAM" to the whole camp (and building if you are at RiverPlex)

-One counselor from each group will take all their campers to the gym or designated location, the other will search

-Counselors with the remaining campers will keep them in one location and keep them calm- play sitting games or riddles. 

-All other available staff will search everywhere- according to your sites plan (look behind doors, under stairs, everywhere)

-If child is found unharmed, announce "CODE ADAM CANCELLED"

-If not found within 10 minutes contact 911. Supervisors will contact Director if not already done, and the Full Time Coordinator (Jess)

-Do not release any campers 

-Note what the child was wearing, what they look like, and what shoes they had on (ask other campers, they always know!) Shoes are unlikely to be changed in case of an abduction. 

-Continue to follow Directors instructions- do not resume normal activity until told to do so
