At the start of the story, Macbeth is a brave and loyal soldier, admired by his peers and trusted by the king. But after hearing a prophecy from three mysterious witches, he becomes ambitious and begins to desire power at any cost. He struggles with guilt and fear after committing murder to take the throne, and over time, his actions become increasingly ruthless and paranoid. By the end of the story, Macbeth is consumed by his ambition and paranoia, making choices that lead to his downfall.

He thought of the king, sleeping peacefully, trusting him completely. His mind raced with ambition and fear. Could he really murder the man who had honored him and whom the kingdom depended on? Every heartbeat seemed louder, every shadow threatening. He knew that if he went through with it, there would be no turning back.

Macbeth has two motivations that are conflicting. He loves and respects the king but also wants to be king as well.
