A prediction or estimate of future events.

What is a forecast?

100

The suns energy heats the ____ faster than the ____.

1. Land

2. Ocean

100

What is it called where two air masses meet?

A front.
100

What do scientists use to measure pressure?

A Barometer

100

Liquid that falls from the sky when a cloud becomes saturated

What is rain?

200

The day to day state of the atmosphere.

What is weather?

200

The ____ cools down slower than the ____.

1. Ocean

2. Land

200

The weather forecast says that the weather will be turning very cold very quickly with the chance of thunderstorms. What type of front would cause this?

A cold front.

200

True or false, Air moves from areas of low pressure to areas of high pressure.

False. Air moves from areas of high pressure to areas of low pressure.

200

This is a word for frozen rain.

What is sleet (or snow, or hail)?

300

The border between an advancing mass of cold air and a receding mass of warm air.

What is a cold front?

300

Hot air goes ___ because it is ______.

1. Up

2. Less dense

300

This kind of front brings warmer temperatures and many days of steady rain.

A warm front.

300

What kind of temperatures are associated with high pressure?

Warmer temperatures.

300

tiny ice crystals that form when water vapor condenses near the ground and freezes.

What is frost?

400

The border between an advancing mass of warm air and a receding mass of cooler air

What is a warm front?

400

Cold air goes _____ because it is ______.

1. Down

2. More dense

400

How does the water cycle connect to weather?

When temperature increases near bodies of water weather is humid. When temperature decreases water condenses, causing precipitation.

400

What kind of temperatures are associated with low pressure?

Cooler temperatures.

400

a giant swirling storm that brings rain and heavy winds

What is a hurricane?

Mrs. Harrison's hometown in eastern Washington has a dry climate, in contrast to Seattle on the western side of the state. Explain why.

Landforms such as mountains can affect local weather patterns by directing the moisture-filled air upward into the cooler atmosphere where the cooled water vapor condenses to form rain, creating a wet climate for one side of the mountain range. This also causes the area on the other side of the mountains to receive little rainfall as the air that flows over the mountains has released its moisture. The direction of wind flow determines which side of a mountain range receives moisture and which side has dry conditions.
