Si un verbo termina en Consonante + Y (como Study), ¿cómo se transforma para la tercera persona y por qué es diferente a un verbo como Play?

En Study, la Y se cambia por -ies (studies) porque antes hay una consonante. En Play, solo se agrega -s (plays) porque antes hay una vocal.
