Only -ir verbs stem change in the preterite. They take the 1st letter of the stem change. They only do this for él/ella/usted and ellos/ellas/ustedes. (They are called sole verbs). Example: dormir is o--> ue. Yo dormí, tú dormiste, ella durmió, nosotros dormimos, ellos durmieron
