Communication

  • Addressing residents by their preferred name or title (e.g., Mr. Lee, Mrs. Khan).

  • Listening actively when a resident speaks, without interrupting or dismissing their concerns.

  • Knocking on the door before entering a resident's room and waiting for a response.

  • Speaking in a calm, respectful tone — never yelling, using baby talk, or patronizing language.

Choice and Autonomy

  • Offering choices about meals, clothing, or daily routines (e.g., “Would you like a bath now or after breakfast?”).

  • Asking for permission before performing personal care tasks.

  • Honoring cultural, religious, and personal preferences (e.g., dietary choices, prayer times, or room decorations).

Privacy and Personal Space

  • Covering residents appropriately during personal care to protect modesty.

  • Ensuring privacy when using the bathroom or during hygiene care.

  • Respecting personal belongings and not moving them without consent.

 Inclusion and Belonging

  • Including residents in conversations, especially when the conversation involves their care.

  • Encouraging participation in social events and community activities, but not forcing them.

  • Supporting relationships by helping residents maintain contact with family, friends, or visitors.

Empathy and Compassion

  • Acknowledging emotions (e.g., “I can see you’re feeling upset. Would you like to talk about it?”).

  • Being patient and gentle during tasks, especially when a resident is confused or frustrated.

  • Showing understanding if a resident refuses care or expresses discomfort.
