Some reasons - For the safety and security of campers and staff, it's important that everyone is done at designated time.

You observe a Volunteer spending a lot of time with the Bear campers. They have been distributing their number and giving campers candy. What do you do?

1. TELL COORDINATOR AND REMOVE VOLUNTEER FROM SCENE. 

2. Document - Camper guardians, Volunteer Director, and guardians of volunteer will all be debriefed.

1. Following the activity ask them how they think everything went

1. See if they have a sibling that can share

1. Read the room - Is the camper serious. Let them know that it's not a funny joke. 

2. Tell Coordinator and what your impression of the situation is.

4. Staff will be spoken to about the situation - Could be real or a harsh false accusation

You are doing sign-out. A JIS participant's guardians arrive and when they do, they run away from the pool. They make it all the way to the road. What do you do?

Follow the behavioral support plan in place for flight risk: 

1. Contact coordinator, supervisor, and guardian immediately

2. Attempt to call them back in a firm but neutral voice, follow them if they are not listening. 

3. Get other staff to help secure the area.

4. When in doubt, it is better to do something than nothing. If this means tackling a child to prevent them from getting hit by a car, do IT!

It's Wednesday and a camper wants to switch groups. What do you do?

1. Explore the root cause/reason 

2. Check group ratios

You observe a Leader being very hands on with campers. They are giving Piggy Back rides, sharing snacks with them, and constantly holding them. 

1. Talk with Leader about boundaries. Capitalize on their strengths, but re-iterate the importance of being aware of our personal space.

A parent/guardian shows up with their dog to sign-in. They bring the dog to the sign-in table and immediately, a group of campers come to pet the dog. What do you do?

Immediately stop the campers from approaching the dog. Let the guardian know that although the dog may friendly, we have a firm policy in place that prevents staff and campers from petting.

There's an email to the Chippewa Summer Camps email, inquiring about space and availability.

"Thank you for your interest in our camps! There are two options, 1: you can join our waitlist in case more spots open up. 2: Check out Adventure Camps! They tend to have more space and availability."

You find out that a Leader has a long tab of behaviours on a Camper. They hit another camper earlier in the morning, and this afternoon they have been spitting and hands-on.

Immediately intervene to stop the behaviour. Remove Camper from the group and have a private conversation about their actions. 

Call home and have camper fill their parents in on what has been happening.

Let parents know that we have zero tolerance for hands-on, but we will develop an action plan. Depending on the context, the camper may lose their swim time or be sent home at the moment. 

DOCUMENT - All parties involved must be informed.

During sign-in, a JIS participant arrives prior to their JIS Facilitator. The Facilitator was supposed to be there 5 minutes ago. What do you do? 

1. Contact Eric and Facilitator to see whereabouts 

2. Assess Staff to see if anyone is JIS trained and is able to hang out with participant until cover arrives

3. Do not let parent/caregiver leave without having proper support for participant

Following a major incident that involved one of your fellow specialists, you notice that they seem really off. They are snippy with the campers and disengaged from the program.

1. If the rapport is there, check in with them in a private space - offer to cover so they can break.

It is sign-in. A parent/guardian addresses a concern to you regarding an incident that happened between a Leader and a Camper yesterday. They said that the Leader yelled at their child and want them removed from the group immediately.

3. Call/Text Tori and fill-in. Tori will speak with the Leader.

1. Thank them for bringing the issue to their attention. Let them know we are going to check on that and follow-up.
