The 2:20 child-adult ratio applies to both, indoor and outdoor activities. Each teacher has the primary responsibility for 10 children and develops a deeper attachment to the identified group. The list of the 10 children’s names and the responsible teacher is posted in the classroom and updated regularly.

Letters should be taught through meaningful activities NOT through letter of the week. Children are most likely to learn the letters in their name first, before others.

How do you teach the children to gather the materials needed for mealtime?

When children are first learning how to gather the many supplies needed for a meal, the first 30 days, the teacher will set up the majority of the child’s place setting for the meal like a bowl, napkin and silverware for the child.  For example, when a child comes to the table the first week of school, he/she may only need to take a plate and a cup to complete their meal setting.  During small groups, children are learning how to coordinate, gather and balance all of the supplies needed for each meal.  By the end of the first 30 days, all children deemed developmentally capable, will be gathering the supplies needed for their meal setting and setting up their meal space independently.

What should staff do to ensure no child is left behind when transitioning from one place to another?

Teachers constantly scan and count the group of children to be aware of where children are located, what they are doing and to account for all children present. Counting is necessary at every transition, when children go inside or outside the classroom, to the gym, to the playground, to the bathroom, for therapy sessions, at drop off/pick-up, or when going for walks.

Teachers should use their ongoing observations, and interactions with the students as well as assessments (ASQ, DRDP, SR, etc.) and screenings (temperament and learning style). The child’s IEP should also be used when applicable.

Rules and routines should be discussed with children starting on the first day of school. There are four classroom ground rules for adults and children. These rules are basic, easy to remember, posted throughout the classroom, modeled and repeated to children regularly, and consistently reinforced.

It helps a child to learn consistency and predictability. Having a consistent schedule provides stability for children. It helps children to better self-regulate and prevents challenging behaviors. It allows children to learn routines and predict what is coming next.

The meal accommodation form should be completed and turned into the Health Services Manager. They will create an Allergy List for all children who are known to have allergies and or medical or special conditions. The list is on a red allergy flip chart to assure privacy and is posted in each classroom.

Fire drills from inside the classroom and on the bus are practiced regularly to prepare children for the event of an emergency and how to evacuate safely.
